Collin Maxim, 67, a retired Air Force veteran and long-time employee for USA Wrestling, passed away Sunday in Apex, N.C., from complications from diabetes.

Born August 6, 1947, Collin grew up in San Bernardino, Calif., where he attended a local Catholic high school.

He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1969, and after 20 years of distinguished service, retired from the Air Force in 1989. He rose to the rank of staff sergeant, serving as an administration specialist. Collin took great pride in his service to his nation and his military career.

In 1984, late in his military career, Collin was transferred by the Air Force to Colorado Springs, Colo. where he served at Peterson Air Force Base. He remained in Colorado Springs after his military retirement, living 26 years in adopted hometown.

He was married to Shirley Nicodemus on May 7, 1983, and they spent more than 31 years together devoted to each other.

In 1991, Collin was hired by USA Wrestling, the national governing body for wrestling in the United States and a member of the U.S. Olympic Committee. He worked more than 18 years there as its Support Services Coordinator, handling a variety of administrative and support duties within the organization.

He enjoyed doing his part in helping USA Wrestling achieve its mission by making an impact on the lives of young people. Collin had many friends within wrestling, always willing to tell a good story or share a joke.

“Collin Maxim was a true American, a veteran that loved people and his country. He was wonderful asset to USA Wrestling during his time with the organization. Always with a smile on his face, a quick joke and love in his heart, Collin will be deeply be deeply missed by the USA Wrestling family. Our thoughts and prayers are with his lovely wife Shirley at this difficult time,” said USA Wrestling Executive Director Rich Bender.

Collin and Shirley moved to Apex, N.C. where they have been living in retirement.

Strong in faith, the Maxims worshipped at the Radiant Assembly of God Church when they lived in Colorado Springs, and have most recently been members of the Chatham Community Church in Chapel Hill, N.C.

Collin was an avid stamp collector, a hobby he started at age 7 and continued throughout his life. He also had an active interest in photography and astronomy.

He is survived by his wife Shirley, his sister-in-laws Dora Jane Maxim and Barbara Maxim, and numerous nieces and nephews around the country.

A memorial get-together of Collin’s family and friends will be held Saturday, April 4 at 2:00 p.m. ET at the home of Stan Nicodemus at 3921 U.S. Highway 64 West, Apex, N.C., 27523.
