HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The championship finals have been determined in men’s freestyle on the final day of the Bill Farrell International, held at Mack Arena on the campus of Hofstra University on Sunday.
There are 11 U.S. wrestlers who have qualified for the gold-medal finals. There were a number of close semifinal bouts featuring top wrestlers, with a few upsets among them.
Reaching the finals at 65 kg/143 lbs. was former Boise State star Jason Chamberlain of the Titan Mercury WC, who edged two-time U.S. World Team member Reece Humphrey of the New York AC in the semifinals, 7-4. Chamberlain avenged a loss to Humphrey at the Phase I World Team Trials last summer by technical fall.
Chamberlain will face Evan Henderson, a two-time NCAA All-American for North Carolina, who defeated Russian Murad Nukhkadiev in the semifinals, 10-5.
“I knew there were be a couple of tough guys coming here. Last year, I was hurt a lot. Most guys were prepared for how I want to wrestle, and last year was not representative of what I could do. I was excited to come out here and compete. I have been training hard. I wanted to show that I am still one of the top guys,” said Chamberlain.
Another big match came at 70 kg/154 lbs., where another past Boise State star, Adam Hall of Titan Mercury, stopped 2014 World Team Trials runner-up Jordan Oliver of the Sunkist Kids, 4-2. The match was tied at 2-2 going in the final two seconds of the match, with Oliver holding the tiebreaker based upon scoring a two-point move, the highest scoring technique. Officials hit Oliver with a caution and one point penalty, and an officials review confirmed the call, giving an additional point to Hall.
“I was attacking the majority of the match. Sometimes, just going after it, luck is on your side sometimes. There is not much else I can say about the situation except that I was putting it out there. He was tieing me up a bit, and I guess they saw that. I’ll take it. I know I might see him again,” said Hall.
A big final at 125 kg/275 lbs. will feature past Junior World champion Dom Bradley of the Sunkist Kids against 2014 University World champion Tyrell Fortune of the Titan Mercury WC. Both powered through their side of the bracket for this showdown.
A surprise finalist for the USA at 86 kg/189 lbs. is Richard Perry of the New York AC, a three-time NCAA qualifier for Bloomsburg who competed at 197 pounds last year in college. Perry defeated 2012 Olympic silver medalist Jaime Espinal of Puerto Rico in the quarterfinals, 8-4, then edged Austin Trotman of Titan Mercury WC, 6-5 in the semifinals. Perry will face another athlete who has dropped in weight in the finals, Deron Winn of the Titan Mercury WC, who has competed on the national freestyle circuit in recent years up at 97 kg/213 lbs.
At least one American is in every finals match except at 61 kg/134 lbs.
This event continues the legacy of the New York Athletic Club International, the longest-running international wrestling tournament hosted in the United States. It honors the late Bill Farrell, a local legend, Hall of Fame inductee and 1972 Olympic coach.
