Perrelli, Chamberlain, Byers among freestyle champs at Northern Plains Senior Regional in Iowa

WATERLOO, Iowa – A number of nationally ranked freestyle talents won titles in the “Last Chance Qualifier” for the World Team Trials, the Northern Plains Senior Regionals on Saturday.
Former Cornell star and U.S. Open runner-up Frank Perrelli (Ithaca, N.Y./Titan Mercury WC) scored an impressive 12-2 technical fall in the finals over Clayton Rush (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Coe).
At 65 kg/143 lbs., former Boise State star and two-time Junior World Team member Jason Chamberlain (Lincoln, Neb./Titan Mercury WC) controlled veteran Brett Robbins (Cedar Falls, Iowa/panther wrestling club), 8-1 in the finals.
Past Oklahoma State star Cayle Byers (Stillwater, Okla./Titan Mercury Wrestling Club) edged past American NCAA runner-up Ryan Flores (Norman, Okla./Sooner WC), 6-5 in the final at 97 kg/213 lbs.
Neither Perrelli, Chamberlain nor Byers had previously qualified for the World Team Trials this year.
Champions qualified to compete in the 2014 U.S. World Team Trials in freestyle in Madison, Wis., May 31-June 2.
Some of the nation’s top young talents also successfully won titles on Saturday.
2012 FILA Junior World silver medalist Patrick Downey (Oviedo, Fla./NYAC) scored a technical fall over Bruce Toal (Sidney, Ohio/Sidney), 11-1 in the 86 kg/189 lbs. finals.
Three-time NAIA champion for Grand View, Eric Thompson (Des Moines, Iowa/Viking WC), won a six-athlete roundrobin at 125 kg/275 lbs. Included was a 15-5 technical fall over Blaize Cabell (Independence, Iowa/panther wrestling club) who competes for Northern Iowa.
In a battle of teammates from the Missouri Wrestling Foundation, Missouri star Zachary Synon (Columbia, Mo. (Missouri WF) stopped Cole Baumgartner (Sycamore, Ill./Missouri WF), 6-1 in the final at 61 kg/132 lbs.
Other individual champions were Vladyslav Dombrovskiy (Rocklin, Calif./WCAP) at 70 kg/154 lbs. and Lucas Smith (Wheeling, Ill./Central Michigan RTC) at 74 kg/163 lbs.
Five women’s freestyle champions were crowned, four uncontested. At 53 kg, Xandria Ford of MWC Wrestling Academy pinned Lynzie Doll of Limestone College two times to claim the gold medal.
