ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Newly-appointed Navy wrestling head coach Joel Sharratt has announced that Nate Engel, a current member of USA Wrestling, has joined the program’s staff as an assistant coach. Engel joins a staff comprised of Sharratt, assistant coach Danny Song and Director of Operations Lloyd Rogers.
“We are excited to bring Coach Engel on as a new member to the staff,” said Sharratt, who is the program’s eighth head coach in what will be its 107th year of fielding a wrestling team. “He has been very successful in his career and as the No. 2 wrestler on the U.S. National Team, he will be a great influence on the development of our light weights and will contribute to a championship culture.
“As a former member of the military, he understands the total mission of the Academy and will be a great mentor for our midshipmen as they go through the transformation that is the Naval Academy - Morally, Mentally and Physically.”
“I want to thank the entire Navy wrestling coaching staff led by head coach Joel Sharratt, as well as Naval Academy Athletic Director Chet Gladchuk for giving me the opportunity to work at such a prestigious institution as the Naval Academy,” said Engel, who has served as a multiple launch rocket system crew member in the National Guard 3-157 Field Artillery Battalion since 2010. “It’s truly an honor to have the opportunity to coach among one of the country’s most historic programs and I look froward to building leaders both on and off the mat.”
Engel began his collegiate career at William Penn University in the fall of 2002 before transferring to Missouri Valley College in the fall of 2004. A four-time NAIA national qualifier, Engel garnered All-America honors in 2005 following a third-place finish at the NAIA Wrestling Championship and was the 2007 University Greco-Roman National Champion at 55 kg. He graduated from Missouri Valley College in January of 2007 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Management.
Engel continued his aspirations of becoming one of the nation’s elite wrestlers earning a spot on the U.S. National Team in 2010 and again in 2013. Along the way, he has achieved numerous accolades, including most recently qualifying for the 2014 World Team Trials. In 2013, he was the World Team Trials runner-up. He was a silver medalist at 55 kg and a bronze medalist at 60 kg in St. Petersburg, Russia. Meanwhile, he scored silver the 2013 Havvisto Tournament and was the Maccabi Games Champion in both Freesyle and Greco-Roman at 55 kg. In 2012, he was the Minnesota Storm Holiday Cup Champion, as well as the Haparanda Cup winner at 55 kg. All told, he has earned U.S. Open All-America status seven times.
While training in Colorado Springs, Engel joined the Air Force wrestling staff in 2013 as a volunteer assistant coach, where he contributed in various different areas. Among them, he worked individually with 125-pound Josh Martinez who was among the nation’s top five throughout the season and amassed a 33-5 record. Additionally, he coached Jesse Stafford who recently qualified for the U.S. World Team Trials and placed seventh at the 2014 ASICS/Las Vegas Senior U.S. Open Wrestling Championship at 74 kg.
