Metcalf wins gold, Ruth, Varner and Dlagnev get bronzes at FILA Golden Grand Prix Finals in Azerbaijan

BAKU, Azerbaijan – Brent Metcalf (Iowa City, Iowa /New York AC/Hawkeye WC) won a gold medal at 65 kg/143 lbs., one of four U.S. medalists at the FILA Golden Grand Prix Finals on Friday.
defeated Magomed Muslimov of Azerbaijan, 6-6 in the finals. Muslimov scored three first-period takedowns for a 6-0 lead. In the second period, Metcalf scored four points on a front headlock roll, then added another takedown later in the period. He won the criteria by having the highest scoring move with his four pointer. Muslimov was seventh in the 2013 European Championships.
Metcalf, who has qualified for his third U.S. World Team, worked his way to the finals with a pair of wins, beating Murad Nuhkadiev of Russia, 9-0, then shutting out rival Haislan Garcia of Canada, 2-0 in the semifinals. He was a two-time NCAA champion and Hodge Trophy winner for Iowa.
Metcalf earned $10,000 for his victory, as did the other champions. The FILA Golden Grand Prix Finals is a major prize money event. Silver medalists earned $5,000, and bronze medalists won $2,000 each.
Three other 2014 U.S. World Team members won bronze medals for the United States.
Ed Ruth (Harrisburg, Pa./Nittany Lion WC) won a bronze medal at 86 kg/189 lbs. He won his bronze-medal bout by forfeit over Taimuraz Friev of Spain, who was fifth in the 2013 World Championships. Ruth had beaten Friev in the Beat the Streets Gala in New York City this spring.
Ruth opened with a pin of Armands Zvirbulis of Latvia, followed by a technical fall over Maqomedqadji Xatiyev of Azerbaijan. In the semifinals, he fell to 2013 World University Games silver medalist Shamil Kudiyamagomedov of Russia, 4-7.
2012 Olympic champion Jake Varner (State College, Pa./Nittany Lion WC) was dominant on his feet, with numerous takedowns on the way to a 10-0 technical fall over 2006 Junior World champion Imants Lagodskis of Latvia in the bronze-medal round.
Varner dropped his opening bout to 2010 World champion and two-time Olympic medalist Khetag Gazyumov of Azerbaijan, 1-5. Overall, Gazyumov has won five World or Olympic medals. When Gazyumov reached the finals, Varner was pulled back into the repechage, where he defeated Roman Bakirov of Azerbaijan, 7-2.
Tervel Dlagnev (Columbus, Ohio/Sunkist Kids/Ohio RTC) added a bronze with a pin of 1998 World champion Alexis Rodriguez of Azerbaijan in the bronze-medal bout. Rodriguez, a 2000 Olympic bronze medalist, won seven World and Olympic medals for Cuba, before departing for Azerbaijan.
Dlagnev opened with a 10-0 technical fall over Soslan Gagloev of Slovakia, tech. fall 10-0, then lost to 2010 Junior World bronze medalist Giorgi Sakandelidze of Georgia, 4-6. Dlagnev was a 2009 World bronze medalist and a 2012 Olympian.
Placing fifth at 57 kg/125.5 lbs. was Nico Megaludis (Murraysville, Pa./Nittany Lion WC) who fell to 2010 European champion Makhmud Magomedov of Azerbaijan in the bronze medal bout, 0-11.
Megaludis, who stars for Penn State, opened with a win over Mehmed Feraim of Bulgaria, 4-1, then fell to 2013 Junior World champion Axmednabi Qvarzatilov of Azerbaijan, 0-6.
The United States placed fourth in the team standings with 43 points. Host Azerbaijan won with 138 points, followed by Russia with 51 and Ukraine with 47.
Eight U.S. women’s wrestlers featuring members of the 2014 U.S. World Team, have weighed in and received their draws. The U.S. team is led by past World champions Elena Pirozhkova (63 kg) and Adeline Gray (75 kg), World silver medalist Helen Maroulis (55 kg) and Olympic bronze medalist Randi Miller (69 kg).
