SNINA, Slovakia – Day one of the 2014 FILA Cadet World Championships produced a tough start for the U.S. Greco-Roman squad, as none of the five competing athletes reached a medal match.

Columbus, Ohio’s Domonick Demas was the star of the day for the U.S. winning his first two bouts impressively at 63 kg/138.75 lbs., 8-0 over Bulgar Madalin of Romania and 4-4 over Ramon Betschart of Switzerland. Demas’s run ended in the quarterfinals when he fell 5-16 to 2014 Cadet European Champion Nikoloz Tchikaidze of Georgia.

Demas was the lone U.S. athlete to win a match on the day.

After an eleventh place finish at this tournament one year ago, Taylor LaMont (Mapleton, Utah) had high hopes of winning a world medal at 58 kg/127.75 lbs. LaMont drew last year’s fifth place finisher at Cadet Worlds, Mikko Peltokangas of Georgia, in the opening round. LaMont fell to Peltokangas by technical fall, 2-10.

The tandem of Iowa State Champions, Drew West (Riverside, Iowa) and Ethan Andersen (Des Moines, Iowa), both had tough international debuts. West dropped his first round match at 50 kg/110 lbs. to Aleh Zhuikou of Belarus 0-8. Anderson would also lose in the opening round of the 100 kg/220 lbs. bracket to Povilas Danilevicius of Lithuania 2-11.

Jacob Spiess (Delta, Ohio) fell in a close 0-4 contest to Georgian Davit Makoidze in his only match of the tournament.

This Cadet team is coached by two-time Olympian in Greco-Roman, Shawn Sheldon.

“The boys wrestled hard but lacked international experience. We got beat in the same area that we get beat at on all levels of Greco Roman, par terre position. Looking forward to a better day tomorrow,” Sheldon said.

Four U.S. athletes have weighed in and received their draws for Wednesday’s Greco-Roman competition.

Dack Punke (Eureka, Ill.) was slated to compete at 46 kg/104.4 lbs. tomorrow for the U.S. but did not make weight.
