ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Top ranked King University finished a very strong college season by winning its first WCWA Women’s College national title at Missouri Baptist University, led by four individual champions. Trailing going into the final session, King defeated Oklahoma City by two points.
2013 U.S. Senior World Team member Alli Ragan won her second straight WCWA National title with a dominant 10-0 technical fall over Shai Mason of the Univ. of Jamestown in the 136 pound finals.
The other four individual champions for the Tornado were first-time WCWA champions: Haley Augello (116), Sarah Hildebrandt (123) and Julia Salata (155).
Augello, a freshman who was U.S. Senior Open runner-up a year ago, dominated Amy Fearnside of the Univ. of Jamestown in the finals, 10-0.
Hildebrandt, who was WCWA runner-up the two previous years, scored a pin in 2:22 in the finals over Cady Chessin of Menlo College.
Salata won a competitive 5-1 decision over Kayla Aggio of Oklahoma City to close the door for King’s team crown.
“We wrestled tough. We won the National Duals but winning the individual nationals is a different ball game. Extra athletes on teams can knock people off. It was a tight race. We felt comfortable after yesterday. I want to say that every win was by tech or pin, and we were leading in team points, but semifinals and consolation finals are where it is at. We had 11 in the semis, six in the finals and five who lost. We struggled in that consolation semifinals round and ended up falling behind in team points to OCU. We had a lot to do but we got it done,” said King coach Jason Moorman.
Simon Fraser placed third with 219 points and four individual champions.
No athlete had ever won four WCWA college national titles in history until tonight, when two stars for Simon Fraser claimed their fourth title as seniors: Victoria Anthony (109) and Helen Maroulis (130). Both were members of the 2013 U.S. Senior World Team. Maroulis is a past World silver medalist, and Anthony boasts two Junior World titles.
Anthony needed very little time to get title number four, pinning Breonnah Neal of Campbellsville in the finals in just 24 seconds.
“I set this goal a long time ago so it was great just seeing it through. It was great to share this day with my friend and teammate Helen,” said Anthony.
Maroulis also dispatched her finals opponent in the first period, with a pin over Rachel McFarland of Oklahoma City in 1:10.
“I ‘m really excited and I got to do it with Vicki , too. We were hugging each other after. I was just awesome,” said Maroulis.
Maroulis was named Outstanding Wrestler, but took the microphone to give her friend Anthony credit for her achievements alongside her.
Two other Simon Fraser athletes won WCWA titles for the second straight year, Justina DiStasio at 170 pounds and Jenna McLatchy at 191 pounds. DiStasio beat Victoria Francis of Lindenwood, 4-0, while McLatchy stopped Malexsis McAdoo of King ,8-2.
Winning a second straight WCWA National title was Oklahoma City star Emily Webster, who took the 101-pound crown with a 10-0 technical fall over Simon Fraser’s Darby Huckle.
Winning her first WCWA crown was Tamyra Mensah of Wayland Baptist, who stopped King’s Amanda Hendey in the 143 finals, 8-0.
