Francis qualifies for women’s bronze-medal bout at FILA Junior Worlds in Croatia

ZAGREB, Croatia - Victoria Francis (Litchfield, Ill./Titan Mercury WC/Lindenwood) has qualified for the bronze-medal round at 72 kg/158.5 on the final day of women’s freestyle at the FILA Junior World Championships in Friday.
Francis will face Francy Radelt of Germany for the bronze-medal, in a session which begins at 6:00 p.m. Zagreb time (six hours ahead of U.S. Eastern Time zone).
Francis, who is a star at Lindenwood University, won her first match with a pin in 39 seconds. In the second round, she fell behind early and lost to Anzhela Kataeva of Russia, 9-2.
When Kataeva qualified for the finals, Francis was pulled back into the repechage, where she defeated Canada’s Gracelyn Doogan, 9-1. Francis was able to score off of mistakes by the Canadian, and also was able to get to a leg attack for a takedown.
The other three U.S. wrestler who entered competition on Friday were eliminated from medal contention.
Getting a chance to wrestle in the repechage rounds was Becka Leathers (Choctaw, Okla./Choctaw WC) at 55 kg/121 lbs.
She opened with a pin over Anastassia Krasanova of Estonia, in 2:32. In the second match, Leathers was ahead late in the match, but Tetyana Kit of Ukraine was able to tie up the bout at 4-4. The tie-breaker went to Kit.
When Kit reached the finals, Leathers went into the repechage, where she was thrown and pinned by Amber Maschke of Canada in 41 seconds.
Two U.S. women were defeated in their preliminary action, but did not qualify for repechage, Cody Pfau (Brush, Colo./OKCU Gator RTC) at 48 kg/105.5 lbs. and Alexis Porter (Ballston Lake, N.Y./New York AC) at 63 kg/138.75 lbs.
Pfau, who was fifth in the FILA Junior Worlds last year, came out quickly with a double leg shot on Milana Dadisheva of Russia. However, Dadisheva was able to counter the attempt, throwing Pfau to her back for a pin in 36 seconds. Dadisheva did not make the finals, putting Pfau out of the tournament.
At 63 kg/138.75 lbs., Alexis Porter (Ballston Lake, N.Y./New York AC) won her first match, stopping Signe Fidje of Norway, 6-2. In her second match, Porter was not able to get her offense going, dropping a decision to Burneebaatar Nyamgerel of Mongolia, 2-7. The Mongolian athlete reached the semifinals, but was defeated, making Porter not eligible for repechage.
