LAS VEGAS – There was no shortage of top-level wrestling as the Las Vegas/ASICS U.S. Open kicked off on Friday morning at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
A wild and exciting quarterfinal round has set the stage for an exciting semifinal round on Friday night.
The featured match of the morning session was a freestyle barnburner between two-time NCAA champion Jordan Oliver and three-time NCAA champion Logan Stieber.
Oliver led 4-2 late in the match before Stieber fired in on a single-leg attack. Stieber was awarded one point for a pushout in the sequence as time ran out while he was trying to gain a two-point takedown.
Stieber beat Oliver in the 2012 NCAA finals. Both wrestlers are past Junior World medalists in freestyle.
The semifinal round is scheduled to start at 5 p.m. local time in Las Vegas. The final two hours of the session will be televised live on NBC Universal, starting at 7 p.m.
All the semifinals will also be shown on a live webcast on Flowrestling.org.
2012 Olympic gold medalists Jordan Burroughs and Jake Varner advanced to the semifinal round in freestyle.
Zach Sanders scored a fall over No. 1 seed Angel Escobedo in the quarterfinals at 57 kg/125.5 lbs. Escobedo, fifth in the World in 2013, was injured and on crutches after the match.
The women’s freestyle semifinals will be highlighted by a loaded bracket at 48 kg/105.5 lbs.
Two-time World medalist Alyssa Lampe will meet three-time Junior World medalist Erin Golston in one semifinal. World champion and Olympic bronze medalist Clarissa Chun will face two-time Junior World champion Victoria Anthony in the other semifinal.
World champions Elena Pirozhkova and Iris Smith, World silver medalist Helen Maroulis and Olympic bronze medalist Randi Miller were among the other women’s semifinalists.
Two-time World medalist Justin Lester and two-time Olympian Spenser Mango are among the semifinalists in Greco-Roman.
The 48 semifinal bouts, 16 in each style, will be contested on two raised mats on a spotlighted platform on Friday night.
