The University of Akron in Akron, Ohio will be hosting the 2013 ASICS University Nationals and FILA Cadet Nationals May 23-26 for men's freestyle and Greco-Roman competition.
This event serves as the World Team Trials for the men's freestyle and Greco-Roman University World Teams. The top place winner in the University division in each weight class will qualify for the University World Team in the style they compete in.
The first place winner in each weight class in the Cadet division will qualify for the men's freestyle or Greco-Roman Cadet World Team.
Online registration (credit card only) is available until 9:00 p.m. CST on Tuesday, May 21. The entry fee for participants registering online is $40. To register online, click here. On-site registration will be available prior to the event for a fee of $50, cash or check only.
This event will be webcast live by a joint effort with USA Wrestling and Flowrestling, similar to the coverage at the U.S. Open in April.
In addition, the new rules implemented by FILA (see this article on TheMat.com for more information) will be used at these tournaments.
In preparation for the 2013 Summer Universiade, or World University Games, USA Wrestling has changed the age requirements for the 2013 University National Championships. The reason for this change is to allow all wrestlers who are eligible to compete internationally into the University Nationals, as this tournament is serving as the University World Team Trials as well.
To qualify in the University division, wrestlers must be currently enrolled in a degree or diploma seeking program at a university or similar institute or received their degree in the last year. All competitors must be U.S. citizens and must be at least 17 and no older than 28 on January 1, 2013. Athletes must have graduated from high school in 2012 or before.
The FILA Cadet National Championships will also serve as a qualifier for the ASICS/Vaughan Cadet National Championships in Fargo, N.D., with top three place winners qualifying for their state's National Team.
To be eligible to compete, FILA Cadet wrestlers must have been born 1996-1998. Only wrestlers born 1997-1998 will be able to qualify for their National Team, however.
Tickets to this event may be purchased on site for a cost of $25 for adults 16 and older or $12 for youth 15 and under for all sessions. Individual day tickets cost $10 for adults and $5 for youth. Children three and under get in free.
