Junior Greco World Duals, an international youth event, set for Concord, Calif., May 23-26

Young international Greco-Roman talents will be on display at the 2013 Junior Greco-Roman World Duals at the Community Youth Center in Concord, Calif., May 23-26.
The event will be a showcase competition as part of World Wrestling Month, which was declared by the international wrestling federation (FILA).
Teams from Sweden, Norway, the Honduras and the United States will go head-to-head at this event. There will be a number of teams from the United States, including a USA All-Star Team, Oregon team and multiple teams from California. Oregon is the defending team champions. California USA Wrestling helps host this event each year.
The event is structured in a unique way. It starts with a round robin dual meet competition. After that, there is an individual tournament. The team champion is determined based upon a point system from both the dual meets and the tournament. Athletes who participate will get between 9-10 matches and 3-4 clinics at the event.
In addition to the competition, there will be clinics for interested wrestlers prior to the competition on May 23-24 as well as during the competition. The organizers traditionally bring top coaches and athletes in to provide clinics and education as part of the event.
"The emphasis of this tournament is development," said Mark Halvorson, the event director. "We bring in big name coaches and athletes as clinicians. The athletes have a chance to train with foreign wrestlers. The competition is a high-level Junior Greco-Roman event. A big part of this is the camaraderie, the cultural aspect and the learning opportunity."
Rosters for the teams will be provided when available.
This will be the 14th year of this event .The first time an international team came for competition was in 2000, with a German Junior Team. Over the years, teams from Germany, Estonia, Norway, Sweden, Hungary, Mexico and Honduras have all participated in this event. It was developed as part of the legacy of a major Senior Greco-Roman event, the Concord Cup, which was held for 20 years in the community in the 1980's and 1990's.
Past athletes who have competed in Greco Junior World Duals and went to success in as NCAA champions and All-Americans included Chris Pendleton, Dylan Ness, Ethan Lofthouse, Alan Waters, Nico Triggas, Nahshon Garrett and Tyrell Fortune.
Admission for spectators is $10 for a 1-day pass or $15 for a 2-day pass and can be purchased at the door. Tickets for Sunday night's dinner and banquet must be purchased by Friday, May 17 from Matt Martin. Wrestlers and coaches get in free and all other tickets cost $20.

As part of World Wrestling Month, a focus of the event is to bring wrestlers and fans together from around the world in a show of solidarity to support Olympic wrestling.
The Junior Greco-Roman World Duals is one of four major international wrestling competition announced by USA Wrestling as part of World Wrestling Month in May. The first to be hosted is the Curby Cup, a Greco-Roman dual meet competition between the United States, Hungary, Lithuania and Serbia in LaGrange, Ill. on May 11. Next is the Rumble on the Rails, an international competition between the USA, Iran and Russia in historic Grand Central Terminal in New York City on May 15. The United States will also host "United 4 Wrestling" a USA vs. Iran freestyle wrestling dual meet at the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena in Los Angeles, Calif. on May 19.
The event is a major opportunity for the Keep Olympic Wrestling movement. On February 12, the International Olympic Committee Executive Board made a recommendation that wrestling not be a core sport at the 2020 Olympic Games. A final decision on the program of the 2020 Olympics will be made by the entire IOC in September. A worldwide effort has been launched by FILA, the international wrestling federation, and all of the 177 nations which participate in wrestling, to retain wrestling as an Olympic sport.
