WINDSOR, Colo. – The United States beat Russia 6-3 in a women’s freestyle dual meet held at Windsor High School on Thursday.
Two U.S. athletes were asked to wrestle in two matches and both were winners both times: Alyssa Lampe (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) and Helen Maroulis (Rockville, Md./Sunkist Kids). Lampe won her bouts at 48 kg/105.5 lbs. and 51 kg/112.25 lbs., while Maroulis had victories at 55 kg/121 lbs. and 59 kg/130 lbs.
“The team wrestled pretty well tonight. We made them wrestle us. We have to get out there, get our offense going and have them wrestle us. We had some tough matches and some ended up being blowouts. A great showing by us,” said National Women’s Coach Terry Steiner.
Team USA jumped out to two wins at the start and never trailed in the dual meet.
At 48 kg /105.5 lbs., two-time World bronze medalist Alyssa Lampe (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) scored a fall over Elena Vostrikova in 3:35. The first period was wild, with Lampe leading 8-4, but almost getting pinned on a throw by Vostrikova. Lampe came out strong in the second, scored a takedown and stacked Vostrikova for the fall.
Next at 55 kg , 2012 World silver medalist Helen Maroulis (Rockville, Md./Sunkist Kids) dominated both periods on the way to an 8-2 win over 2010 Junior World bronze medalist Irina Olognova.
Russia came back with a victory at 48 kg/105.5 lbs., when Junior World champion and Senior European champion Valeria Chepsarakova opened up her offense in the second period to defeat WCWA college national champion Emily Webster (Sedalia, Mo./OKCU Gator RTC), 9-3. Webster trailed 4-3 after the first, scoring a three-point counter on the edge, but the Russian dominated the second frame.
In an competitive bout between the No. 1 wrestler from each nation, two-time Junior World bronze medalist and 2013 World Team member Alli Ragan (Carbondale, Ill./New York AC/King University) edged Junior World champion and Senior World Team member Svetlana Lipatova, 1-0. Ragan scored the only point when Lipatova was hit for stalling, and could not score during the 30-second shot clock.
After the intermission, Russia rebounded at 67 kg /147./5 lbs., as 2013 European bronze medalist Svetlana Babushkina scored throughout the bout to defeat Julia Salata (Canton, Mich./New York AC/King University), 10-1.
At 67 kg/147.5 lbs., 2013 World Team member Veronica Carlson (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) scored a takedown and a series of effective ankle laces to score a technical fall over 2011 Yarygin Memorial champion Darima Sangeeva, 14-4 in 4:02.
Competing in her second match, and up a weight at 51 kg /112.25 lbs, Lampe fell behind 4-0 to two-time Junior World silver medalist Stalvira Orshush. She was able to get her offense going, scoring a takedown and numerous gut wrenches, for a 14-4 technical fall in 2:28.
“When in a dual format, you usually wrestle once, so definitely two matches was a little bit of a challenge. After the first match, you know you have to come back and wrestle that second one. I felt great all day today. I kept up the pressure and never let myself get out of the match,” said Lampe.
Next up was Maroulis once again, also up a weight at 59 kg/130 lbs. against 2013 European silver medalist Jargalma Tsyrenova. The Russian led 4-0 but Maroulis battled back with two takedowns to tie it at 4-4, and Maroulis won the tiebreaker with two two-point moves.
In the final match of the evening, 2012 Olympic champion and 2013 World silver medalist Natalia Vorobieva edged 2012 World champion and two-time World bronze medalist Adeline Gray (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC/Titan Mercury WC), 6-5 in an entertaining slugfest.
Vorobieva jumpet to a 4-2 lead in the first period, but Gray seemed to tire her out. In the second period, Gray rallied from behind to close it to a 6-5 score. Gray almost turned Vorobieva with 10 seconds left but was unable to secure the needed exposure points. Fans reached with applause for both athletes on a great match.
Vorobieva had defeated Gray with a 10-0 technical fall on Tuesday night in a dual meet in Albuquerque, N.M.
It was the second dual meet between these two national teams this week. On Tuesday, the USA defeated Russia 7-4 in Albuquerque, N.M.
Both dual meets were well attended, as a capacity crowd came out to fill Windsor’s high school gym for the dual.
