Although Oklahoma City University has won the last four WCWA Women's College national team titles, the Stars don't hold the No. 1 team ranking going into the 2012-13 season. That honor goes to King College, which placed second behind OCU at the 2011 WCWA Nationals.
King will host the WCWA Nationals on January 26, 2013, the second straight year the event has been held on their campus.
The King College team has two individuals with No. 1 rankings, two with No. 2 rankings and five wrestlers with No. 3 rankings going into the season. It is this depth which gives King the pre-season edge, as the Tornadoes seek to win their first WCWA team title.
Oklahoma City sits at No. 2, with two No. 1 ranked wrestlers, three No. 2 ranked wrestlers and a No. 3 ranked wrestler.
Rounding out the top five teams in preseason are No. 3 Lindenwood, No. 4. Simon Fraser and No. 5 Cumberlands. Of this group, only the Univ. of the Cumberlands is a past WCWA National team champion.
This year, a record 20 teams are included in the WCWA team rankings, as the number of college programs for women wrestlers has grown quickly in recent seasons.
Five returning champions are back and will receive No. 1 individual rankings: Emily Webster of Oklahoma City (101), Joey Miller of Oklahoma City (116), Shauna Isbell of Lindenwood (130), Krista Revelle of King (136) and Justina DiStassio of Simon Fraser (170).
Two past WCWA champions who did not compete last year but have claimed No. 1 rankings for this year are Victoria Anthony of Simon Fraser (109) and Danielle Lappage of Simon Fraser (143).
All three took Olympic redshirt years last year, with Anthony and Maroulis trying out for the United States team and Lappage trying out for the Canadian team. Maroulis won a silver medal at the 2012 World Championships. Anthony is a past two-time Junior World champion while Lappage is also a past Junior World champion.
Other individual top-ranked wrestlers include Sara Hildebrandt of King (123), Sydney Nelson of the Cumberlands (155) and Miriam Moreno of Wayland Baptist (191).
2012 WCWA champion Emily Martin is back at 109 pounds, but holds a No. 2 ranking behind Anthony.
