Joe Sievert of Morningside (Iowa) has been named the NAIA National Wrestler of the Week, the national office announced Wednesday. Sievert was selected based on his performances from Jan. 24 - 30.
Sievert pinned three opponents and notched a 12-8 decision over Hastings' (Neb.) sixth-ranked Jameon Rush to win his first Great Plains Athletic Conference 165-pound championship. The sophomore stuck Ben Taylor of Briar Cliff (Iowa) in 3:53, Dakota Wesleyan's (S.D.) Tanner LaValliere in 5:20 and Blake Augustyn of Concordia (Neb.) in 2:43 prior to the championship bout. Sievert's bonus points helped the Mustangs capture their first-ever GPAC title with 165 points.
A native of Akron, Iowa, Sievert is currently the top-ranked 165 pounder with a record of 16-3. The All-American has eight pins, three major decisions and a technical fall to his credit this season.
The next Wrestler of the Week announcement will be on Feb. 9.
Nominees: Parker Owen of Baker (Kan.); Derek Foore, Notre Dame (Ohio); Kyle Reid, McKendree (Ill.); Josh Ashbrook, Campbellsville (Ky.).
