Former Duke wrestler John Barone inducted into William Floyd H.S. Hall of Fame

Former Duke University wrestling standout John Barone recently was inducted into the William Floyd Hall of Fame. Barone was one of six former athletes at William Floyd to be honored at the fourth annual induction ceremony on Sept. 25.
The youngest honoree at the event, Barone graduated from Duke in May of 2010 and is currently serving in the army at Ft. Leonard Wood in Missouri. He was commissioned in the spring of 2010 on Duke's campus.
"There is no doubt in my mind that John will excel in all his future endeavors ad we are excited that his high school is recognizing his successes," Duke head coach Clar Anderson said. "His work ethic, dedication and leadership were second to none."
A four-year letterwinner for the Blue Devils, Barone departed as Duke's all-time leader in career wins. The native of Shirley, N.Y., compiled a career record of 112-36 and owns the second fastest fall in Duke history at 11 seconds. Barone also holds the top two single-season performances for the Blue Devils, amassing 36 and 35 victories as a sophomore and junior, respectively.
In 2008-09, Barone finished with a 36-8 overall record at 184 pounds and earned an at-large invitation to the NCAA Tournament. Excelling in the classroom as well as on the mat throughout his career, Barone was named the 2009 ACC Wrestling Scholar Athlete of the Year. He is the first Blue Devil in program history to earn NWCA All-Academic Team honors three consecutive seasons.
Barone closed out his career with a 17-9 overall record at 197 pounds during the 2009-10 season. He took fourth at the ACC Championship and earned runner-up finishes at the Pembroke Classic and Keystone Classic.
