The Curby Cup was a huge success in Plainfield, Ill. on Saturday in celebration of Jacob Curby's life

The wrestling community came from around the nation to Plainfield, Ill. on Saturday night for an all-star dual meet which was held to celebrate the life of the late Jacob Curby.

Over 2,000 people packed into Plainfield East High School to watch great wrestling matches, featuring nationally-ranked Senior-level wrestlers as well as talented Cadet and Junior level wrestlers from Illinois.

"The Curby Cup was a fitting tribute to Jake" said Nick Curby, the event host and Jake's older brother. "All of the wrestlers went as hard as they could, the only way Jake knew how. Thewrestling community in Illinois, as well as around the country, has been very supportive of our family, and tonight was no different. I hope as the Curby Cup continues to grow it will continue to expose wrestling fans to some of the nation's best wrestling and keep the memory of Jake Curby alive."

Greco-Roman Team USA member Jacob Curby, an Illinois native, unexpectedly passed away at the age of 25 this winter. This was a way for his many friends, as well as others who admired Jake, to come together in his memory.

The Outstanding Wrestler on the Senior level was 2009 U.S. World Team member Faruk Sahin (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC), who defeated John Paun (Thornwood, Ill.), 7-0, 7-0 in their match.

The Outstanding Wrestler on the Junior/Cadet level was Dillon Cowan (Harvard, Ill.) who defeated Luke Smith (Wheeling, Ill.), 7-0, 8-0.

The Most Exciting Match was the age-group battle between Nick Harrison (Stillman Valley, Ill.) and Nick Drendel (North Aurora, Ill.), which was won by Harrison by a 5-1, 0-1, 8-2.

On the Senior level, 2008 Olympian and 2009 U.S. World Team member Spenser Mango (St. Louis, Mo./New York AC) pinned pin Lilshaun Coleman (Oak Park, Ill.) in the second period.

2009 U.S. World Team member Chas Betts (St. Michael, Minn./New York AC) won his bout, defeating Nate Patrick (Naperville, Ill./Sunkist Kids), 2-0, 1-0.

Other Senior-level winners were Andy Bisek (Chaska, Minn./Minnesota Storm), Pete Gounaridis (Leominster, Mass./Sunkist Kids), Mark Stenberg (Lockport, Ill./USOEC), Ellis Coleman (Oak Park, Ill./New York AC), Max Nowry (Wheeling, Ill./New York AC) and Corey Hope (Glenbard, Ill./USOEC).

Past Cadet National champions Mike Sojka (Winnebago, Ill.) and Zane Richards (Carbondale, Ill.) won matches. Sojka defeated Charles Lewis (Thornwood, Ill.), 2-0, 1-0 and Richards (Carbondale, Ill.) beat Ben Whitford (Aurora, Ill.), 1-0, 1-0.

There was one freestyle match on the card, as FILA Junior National champion and Junior Nationals runner-up Nick Dardanes (Oak Park, Ill.) defeated Bo Schlosser (Bettandorf, Iowa), 6-0, 8-1.

Other age-group winners were Austin Marsden (Crystal Lake, Ill.) and Sammy Brooks (Oak Park, Ill.).

All proceeds from the event will benefit underprivileged wrestlers in Illinois who wish to participate in the ASICS/Vaughan Junior and Cadet National Championships in Fargo, N.D.

Internationally-respected announcer and Illinois resident Sandy Stevens served as the public address announcer.

Retired National Greco-Roman Resident Coach Anatoly Petrosyan represented the USA Wrestling National Greco-Roman coaching staff.

Jake's coaches, Mark King from Lyons Township High School and Ivan Ivanov from Northern Michigan Univ. and the Suples WC, were honorary coaches.

Two-time Olympian Jim Gruenwald, who was one of Jake's coaches at Northern Michigan, also participated in the program.
