COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Some of the biggest names in the history of wrestling in the United States will converge on the Rocky Mountain region this week.

The U.S. National Freestyle Coaches Summit will be held on Thursday at the U.S. Olympic Training Center.

Legends Dan Gable and John Smith headline a list of top coaches who will discuss a variety of topics during a day-long session about Olympic-style wrestling in this country.

"The brightest American coaching minds are at the table" U.S. National Coach Zeke Jones said. "These are the coaches that will lead America, and inevitably the success of the program rides on the leadership of our coaches. I'm excited to see what kind of input we receive and I'm looking forward to seeing where we can improve."

Past U.S. National Coaches Kevin Jackson and Bruce Burnett, and past U.S. Assistant National Coach Terry Brands, also are among the group expected to take part in the Summit. Past Olympic coaches Joe Seay, Bobby Douglas, Greg Strobel and Kerry McCoy also are slated to take part.

A number of other top freestyle coaches are expected to be in Colorado for the Summit.

Ron Brant, Head of Sports Performance for the United States Olympic Committe for Acrobatic and Combat Sports, also will be involved with the Freestyle Summit.

Training philosophies, strategies, tactics, and top scoring actions from wrestlers around the World are among the issues that will be discussed during the meetings.

This is the second National Summit for freestyle being held since Jones became National Coach in 2008.

"The first one we had was with athletes and coaches, and different levels of leadership" Jones said. "This one is strictly with coaches. Our goal is to do long-range strategic planning and look at our Regional Training Center model. We also will look at what goes on with the High Performance Team at the Olympic Training Center. We will analyze what the U.S. team is doing on the mat, and break that down. And then we will do the same thing with all the wrestlers who won titles last year at the World Championships.

"My hope is we will come away with a plan that will help us learn how to beat the best wrestlers in the World. We want to walk away with a consensus on how we need to do that. The first Summit gave us tremendous momentum - we hope to build on that and keep that momentum going."
