Jordan Rogers and Quinton Murphy display their gold medals after winning the Pan American Youth Olympic Games qualifier in freestyle wrestling in Monterrey, Mexico

MONTERREY, Mexico - Two U.S. men's freestyle wrestlers, Quinton Murphy of Holley, N.Y. at 63 kg/138.75 lbs. and Jordan Rogers of Spokane, Wash. at 76 kg/167.5 lbs. won gold medals at the Pan American Youth Olympic Games Qualifier men's freestyle held on Wednesday.

With their victories, both Murphy and Rogers have secured a spot in the Youth Olympic Games (YOG) which will be held in Singapore, August 14-26.

Murphy had a 4-0 record in the tournament, including a victory in the gold-medal finals over Johnny Javier Pilay of Ecuador, 7-1, 5-0.

Rogers won both of his matches by pin. In the championship finals, he split the first two periods against Dalton Webb of Canada, then scored a clutch pin in the third period.

"Murphy had to battle hard in the semifinals to win that match, then wrestled very well in the finals. Rogers lost a period in the finals and ended up pinning the opponent in the third period. It was a strong performance by both champions" said U.S. coach Dave Bennett.

The U.S. also claimed two silver medals and a bronze medal, earning a medal in all five weight classes contested. In the team standings, the United States came in first with 46 points, followed by Canada with 35 points and Mexico with 34 points.

Winning silver medals were Nathan Tomasello of Parma, Ohio at 46 kg/101 lbs. and Tanner Hall of Meridian, Idaho at 100 kg/220 lbs.

Tomasello won his first two matches, then was edged in the finals by Andri Davila of Venezuela, 1-1, 2-1, 2-3. Hall won his semifinal bout handily, but lost a close finals bout to Abraham de J. Conyedo of Cuba, 0-2, 0-1.

A bronze medal was secured by Nathan Kraisser of Ellicott City, Md. at 54 kg/119 lbs. Kraisser was defeated in the semifinals by the eventual champion, and ended the day with a 3-1 record.

"I thought we wrestled very well as a team. All five wrestlers made the semifinals, and four made the finals, which is very good. It was a great performance by them all. Coach Sam Portillo did a great job with the team as well. The quality of this tournament was really good. It is obvious that these countries took this event seriously and were prepared" said Bennett.

The most wrestlers any nation can bring to YOG in men's freestyle is two, so champions Murphy and Rogers have earned the U.S. positions in the competition. In the qualifying rules, two athletes from each weight class from the Pan American nations will advance to YOG. Since the two U.S. spots were filled by champions, runners-up Tomasello and Hall can not attend, and the bronze medalists at their weights will have the opportunity to go to Singapore.

The United States qualified a total of four athletes for the YOG. In addition to Murphy and Rogers in men's freestyle, the USA will also qualified women's freestyle wrestler Jenna Burkert of Middle Island, N.Y and Greco-Roman wrestler Luke Sheridan of Concord, Calif. to compete in Singapore with victories earlier this week. The maximum that the USA could have qualified to compete in YOG was five athletes.
