U.S. team ready to compete at Women's World Cup in Nanjing, China, March 27-28

The United States will send a talented team of women freestyle wrestlers to compete at the Women's World Cup in Nanjing City, China, March 27-28.

The top eight teams from the 2009 World Championships are entered in the event, which is the annual international dual meet championships.

The participating teams, based upon World Championships finish, are: 1. Azerbaijan; 2. Japan; 3. Canada; 4. Ukraine; 5. Russia; 6. United States; 7. Mongolia; 8. China.

Six members of the 2009 U.S. World Team will compete in the World Cup for the United States.

Included are all three athletes who placed fifth in their weight classes at the 2009 World Championships: Tatiana Padilla (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 55 kg/121 lbs., Deanna Rix (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 59 kg/130 lbs. and Adeline Gray (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 67 kg/147.5 lbs.

Padilla was a 2008 World bronze medalist in her weight class. Rix also was fifth at the 2008 World Championships. Gray won a Junior World gold medal in 2008.

Competing at 72 kg/158.5 lbs. will be Ali Bernard (New Ulm, Minn./Gator WC), who was fifth at the 2008 Olympic Games. Bernard was also a member of the 2009 U.S. World Team. She won two Junior World titles during her career.

The other 2009 U.S. World Team members on this year's World Cup team are Jessica Medina (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 51 kg/112.25 lbs. and Elena Pirozkhova (Colorado Springs, Colo./Gator WC) at 63 kg/138.75 lbs. Pirozkhova, who is a past University World champion, also was a 2008 U.S. World Team member.

Completing the U.S. roster are Alyssa Lampe (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 48 kg/105.5 lbs. and alternate Kelsey Campbell (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 59 kg/130 lbs. Both athletes are ranked No. 2 on Women's Freestyle Team USA.

The first day of the World Cup on Saturday will feature pool competition. The event will be split into two pools, each with four teams. Each team will have three dual meets, facing each of their pool opponents. Teams will advance to the medal matches based upon their finish in their pool. On Sunday, the first place, third place and fifth place dual meets will be held.
