Sam Julian named as a wrestling referee for 2010 Youth Olympic Games in Singapore

Sam Julian of Schuylkill Haven, Pa. has been named as a wrestling referee for the 2010 Youth Olympic Games, which will be held in Singapore, August 14-26.

This is the historic first Youth Olympic Games ever held. The YOG is a unique competition which will bring in young athletes from all over the world to compete in a variety of sports. This event will feature Olympic-level competition in Greco-Roman, men's freestyle, women's freestyle, and Beach wrestling.

Julian has been officiating on the national level for eight years, achieving the U.S. rank of M1 in 2006. He has been a FILA international official since 2008 and holds a FILA II ranking on the international level.

Julian was a referee at the Pan American Youth Olympic Games Qualifier, held in Mexico in May. Referees who worked that event were among the pool of candidates for the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore.

"When I went to Mexico, it was the first time I was out of the country to officiate" said Julian. "When we were there, we were told that they weren't taking all of us to Singapore. Shortly afterwards, I got an email from (FILA President) Raphy Martinetti about the assignment. I was very excited. It will be an experience of a lifetime over there. I am looking forward to it. I am so grateful that USA Wrestling gave me the opportunity to go to Mexico for the chance to be selected for this honor."

Julian has officiated many major national events on the USA Wrestling schedule including the U.S. Senior Open three times and the Senior World Team Trials one time.

On the age-group levels., he has worked at the ASICS Junior/Cadet Nationals four times, the University/FILA Cadet Nationals four times, the Kids Nationals three times, the Cadet National Duals three times, the Junior National Duals three times and the Schoolboy National Duals two times.

His international experience includes working the New York Athletic Club Holiday International in New York City two times.

Julian received the 2009 Glenn Blackman Memorial Award, which is presented to a new official who is working to improve and for recognition of outstanding accomplishments as a mat official and contributions to USA Wrestling.

Julian is in his sixth year coaching at Blue Mountain School District and his third year as the Itinerant Learning Support Teacher at Blue Mountain Middle School.

He was a talented high school wrestler for Blue Mountain High School in Pennsylvania, a league champion, district medalist and regional qualifier. He was a multiple-time medalist in USA Wrestling state competitions, winning three state Greco-Roman titles and one state freestyle title. In 2001, he was a national All-American, placing fifth at the Cadet Nationals.

Julian attended Kutztown University, where he received a bachelor's degree in elementary education and special education. He competed on the wrestling team for a year there. Throughout his years in college, Julian was very active as a referee within USA Wrestling.

"I have had very good mentors and teachers in officiating, and I am very grateful to them all" said Julian.
