Perry wins freestyle bronze medal at Junior World Championships in Hungary

BUDAPEST, Hungary - Chris Perry (Stillwater, Okla./Gator WC) at 84 kg/185 lbs won a bronze medal at 84 kg/185 lbs. at the Junior World Championships at the Syma Arena on Sunday night.
Perry defeated Attila Szmik of Hungary in a bronze medal match, 1-0, 0-1, 1-0. Perry won both the first and the third periods in the clinch in the offensive position, winning both ball draws. Szmik's second period point was a questionable takedown.
Perry beat Ville Tapani Heino of Finland, 2-0, 2-0, Ilya Xamikoyev of Azerbaijan, 1-0, 0-2, 1-0 and Grigorios Kriardis of Greece, 2-0, 1-0. He lost a semifinal match to Ibrahim Bolukbasi of Turkey, 2-0, 1-0.
"I thought I wrestled all right. There is definitely a lot of work I have to improve on" said Perry. "It is a different level here. I started out pretty hot early, wrestling better. In the semis, there was a lot to learn with positions. It will be a good learning experience, again. It's not what I wanted, but I finished it well."
Perry, who competes for Oklahoma State, placed fifth in the 2009 Junior World Championships.
"Through the whole tournament, Chris wrestled fantastic" said U.S. Junior World coach Rob Eiter. "He beat some guys where he wrestled really well. To come back for the bronze medal against the hometown kid from Hungary, you are already down 2-0 before they blow the whistle. He showed a lot of poise and a lot of composure. He came to wrestle. Obviously, he wanted to do better and could have been in the finals. It takes a lot of strength to come back for third place after a tough loss in the semis."
Placing fifth after dropping bronze medal matches were Jason Chamberlain (Springville, Utah/Bronco WC) at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. and Jeremy Johnson (Broadview Heights, Ohio/Bobcat WC) at 120 kg/264.5 lbs.
Chamberlain was beaten by Anton Afansyeu of Belarus in the bronze medal match. 0-1, 1-0, 1-2 to place fifth.
Afansyeu scored a takedown to win the first, and Chamberlain won the second on the clinch in the offensive position. In the deciding third, Chamberlain scored first, then Afansyeu scored midway in the period. As time ran out, Chamberlain got behind Afsanyeu but he was not awarded a takedown. The U.S. protested the call, which was upheld, and Afansyeu received the second point for the failed protest.
Chamberlain opened with a victory over Yun-Han Lee of Korea, 1-0, 5-1. He lost his second bout to Kotaro Tanaka of Japan, 2-2, 2-2, 0-3. In the repechage rounds, he defeated Lennard Wickel of Germany, 0-1, 3-1, 2-1 and Mirbek Adbydaev of Kyrgyzstan, 1-0, 1-0.
Chamberlain, who competes for Boise State, was on his second straight U.S. Junior World Team. He did not place last year.
Johnson lost to Giorgi Sakandelidze of Georgia in a bronze-medal match, 0-6, 0-3. Sakandelidze was effective, hitting three arm spins for takedowns and turning Johnson three times from the mat.
Johnson beat Bincho Dinkov Stoyanov of Bulgaria, 2-0, 2-0 and Ihar Dziatko of Belarus, 2-0, 1-0. He was defeated in a competitive semifinal bout by Taha Akul of Turkey, 0-1, 0-3. Johnson competes for Ohio University.
Ryak Finch (Safford, Ariz./Arizona Heat WC) went 0-1 at 55 kg/121 lbs. and did not place. He was not eligible for the repechage. Finch, a Junior Nationals double champion in 2009, is a graduated senior who will be attending Iowa State.
The USA finished the event with one bronze medal, and three fifth-place finishers, as Nick Roberts was fifth at 50 kg/110 lbs. on Saturday.
The USA finished with 26 points in sixth place. Russia won the team title with 70 points, followed by Azerbaijan with 50 points, Georgia with 49 points, Turkey with 42 points and Iran with 33 points.
