UPDATED: Nowry qualifies for bronze-medal match at Junior World Championships in Hungary

BUDAPEST, Hungary - Max Nowry (Wheeling, Ill./New York AC) has qualified for the bronze-medal match at 50 kg/110 lbs. at the Junior World Championships in Greco-Roman on Tuesday at the Syma Arena.

Nowry's opponent for the bronze-medal match will be Seiki Goya of Japan.

Nowry opened with a 6-0, 0-2, 6-0 win over Khasan Suliamanov of Kyrgyzstan. Nowry had three gut wrench turns in both the first and the third period to win those periods by technical fall.

In the second round, Nowry continued with a strong offense, getting turns in both periods on the way to a victory in two straight periods over Ashot Askanakov of Armenia.

In the semifinals, Nowry faced European Junior champion Eldaniz Azizli of Azerbaijan, and was defeated in two straight periods, 0-1 and 0-6. After winning the first period with a score from his feet, Azizli scored twice from the par terre position in the second period for the win.

Nowry is with the U.S. Olympic Education Center program at Northern Michigan Univ. He placed sixth at the 2009 Junior World Championships at this weight class.

Three of the four U.S. wrestlers competing on Tuesday opened with victories.

At 60 kg/132 lbs., Jimmy Chase (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) started with victory over Asian Junior bronze medalist Hyung-Min Kim of Korea, 2-0, 7-0.

In the second round, Chase was defeated in two periods by Goga Gogiberashvili of Georgia. When Gogiberashvili was beaten in the quarterfinals, Chase was not eligible for the repechage rounds.

Chase, originally from Carol Stream, Ill., is a U.S. Olympic Training Center resident athlete. He is competing in his third Junior World Championships event. He was fifth at the 2009 Junior World Championships.

In the first round at 96 kg/211.5 lbs., Robert Barbour (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) defeated Christakis Polianidis of Greece, 0-1, 1-0, 1-0.

In the second round, Barbour was defeated by Coskun Efe of Germany. When Efe was defeated in the semifinals, Barbour was not eligible for the repechage rounds.

Barbour is a U.S. Olympic Training Center resident athlete.

At 74 kg/163 lbs., Alec Ortiz (Grand Ronde, Ore./Minnesota Storm) dropped his opener to Toghrul Yunuslu of Azerbaijan, 0-1, 3-0, 0-2. After losing the first period on a takedown, Ortiz came back with a three-point front headlock roll to win period two. Yunuslu won the third, scoring two takedowns defending offensive attempts by Ortiz. When Yunuslu lost his next round to an opponent from Japan, Ortiz was eliminated.

Ortiz competes for the Univ. of Minnesota.
