STILLWATER, Okla. - No. 2 Iowa State finished a sweep of Oklahoma with a 20-18 victory over No. 4 Oklahoma State on Sunday afternoon in front of 3,807 at Gallagher-Iba Arena.

The Cyclones, who beat No. 10 Oklahoma, 21-12, on Friday in Norman, split the 10 bouts with the Cowboys with a pin by Jake Varner at 197 and a technical fall by freshman Andrew Long at 125 the difference.

Oh, and a massive third-period rally by Andrew Sorenson at 157 pounds.

"Bonus points are nice, especially after the pin at 141 set the tone for them and gave them a lot of life," said ISU coach Kevin Jackson, whose squad is now 9-2. "Coming back and winning 149, then the win at 157 was huge. I think Sorenson's win, and of course, Jake's fall was the difference in the dual."

After Long's 20-5 domination of OSU senior Chris Notte gave the visitors a 5-0 lead, the Cowboys responded with talented rookie Jordan Oliver beating All-American Nick Fanthorpe, 7-5, at 133 pounds.

Oliver (19-2) beat Iowa's Daniel Dennis in Iowa City last weekend and jumped out with two first period takedowns on Sunday. However, Fanthorpe (11-6) made a third period charge - something that would be a theme for much of the dual.

"We are trying to bring a style that is exciting, wrestling for seven minutes," said Jackson, whose team outscored their hosts, 26-14, over the final two minutes in the 10 bouts with eight of OSU's points coming on escapes. "You have to come from behind at the national tournament, so (Sunday) was good for us, working toward what you have to do to win matches in the third period."

"It was tough. It was very back-and-forth," said Cowboy head coach John Smith, whose team fell to 8-2-1. "I think a lot of experience came through for Iowa State and some good hard wrestling … not that we didn't … just again we can't afford to make a lot of mistakes.

"I'm not disappointed in our effort for the most part. Some of the matches we just didn't appear to keep it together mentally. But I really felt like we competed as well as we could."

OSU took the lead, 9-5, when Jamal Parks (21-4) caught Dalton Jensen for a fall at 2:42.

Parks was coming off a tough loss to Iowa's Montel Marion last Saturday in Iowa's 19-16 win.

ISU regained the lead with three straight victories from 149 to 165.

Mitch Mueller (20-7) was in control throughout, beating Quinten Fuentes, 7-2, at 149 pounds.
Perhaps the difference between winning and losing came at 157.

OSU junior Neil Erisman took down Sorenson within 30 seconds and finished the first period with 2:30 of riding time. An escape to start the second made it 3-0 before Sorenson, a sophomore, scored a takedown. Erisman's escape sent the bout to the third period at 4-2.

Sorenson (20-6) chose neutral to start the third and quickly scored a takedown over a tired Erisman (19-7) to tie it at 4-4. Another escape followed by a Sorenson takedown and it was 6-5 in favor of the Cyclone. Unable to work off the riding time point, Sorenson cut Erisman again and managed a takedown at the buzzer for an 8-7 victory.

Junior Jon Reader (17-3) followed with an exciting 7-5 win over OSU rookie Alex Meade, who was coming off a victory over Ryan Morningstar of Iowa last week. Meade (21-5) scored a sweet second-period takedown off a counter in which he gave up his leg but turned a somersault into two. But Reader responded with a reversal and the match went to the third at 4-4. Reader again reversed Meade in the third and 1:42 of riding time gave him a tough win and put ISU up 14-9.

OSU gave themselves a chance with a 10-4 victory by Mike Benefiel (25-2) at 174 and a down-to-the-wire 3-1 decision by Clayton Foster over Jerome Ward at 184. Ward made a late charge and nearly scored at the buzzer.

The much anticipated bout between Varner, the reigning NCAA champ, and Alan Gelogaev, who brought a 21-1 mark into Sunday, ended with a cradle.

After a scoreless first period, Gelogaev chose down to start the second. Varner (20-0) methodically and physically worked a cross-face cradle and ended it at 4:43.

"I go out with the same mindset wanting to pin everybody," said Varner, who recorded his 10th fall of his senior campaign. "(Gelogaev) is tough. He has a different feel to him with a freestyle background but I was going to stick to my game plan. When I'm on top I generally see what is there and the cradle was there so that is what I went with.

"It was a good weekend for me and the team. But this weekend is over and it's time to start getting ready for the next one."

Varner's pin at 197 sent the dual to heavyweight with the visitors up 20-15, meaning top-ranked Jared Rosholt had to pin an old rival, senior David Zabriskie, ranked second.

Zabriskie had beaten Rosholt in five of their seven bouts but the only returning All-American for OSU had wins in two of the last three.

Rosholt (22-1) won 8-5 but had to hold on after building a 5-1 lead.

"Those were just tough matches, the ones we lost," said Rosholt, who is now tied for 20th with Randy Couture and Teague Moore on the OSU all-time wins list at 113. "They could have gone either way and most of them didn't go our way. We knew they would be close, but it's kind of disappointing that we didn't pull off any upsets. It doesn't really change anything. It's nice to get a win as an individual, but that's not what really matters in the end."

Iowa State, winners of four of the last five duals against OSU, will challenge No. 6 Cornell in Ithaca, N.Y., next Sunday. The Cowboys travel to Northern Colorado and Wyoming this Friday.
