Poeta, Paulson set to battle for final spot on World Cup Team

The final spot on the U.S. World Cup team for freestyle wrestling will be determined on Feb. 28.

Mike Poeta will battle Travis Paulson in a Special Wrestle-Off at 74 kg/163 lbs. on Sunday, Feb. 28 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. The time of the match will be determined.

Poeta, a two-time NCAA runner-up for Illinois, beat 2009 World Team member Trent Paulson 3-0, 5-2 during the World Cup Wrestle-Offs on Jan. 22 at the Olympic Training Center.

Poeta (Champaign, Ill./Lehigh Valley AC) won the Sunkist Kids International Open earlier this season.

Travis Paulson placed second at the 2009 U.S. World Team Trials. He won the Hargobind International earlier this season. Paulson, who competes for the Sunkist Kids, splits his time training between Ames, Iowa and the Olympic Training Center.

The remaining members of the U.S. World Cup Team include Sam Hazewinkel at 55 kg/121 lbs., Shawn Bunch at 60 kg/132 lbs., Teyon Ware at 66 kg/145.5 lbs., Jake Herbert at 84 kg/185 lbs., J.D. Bergman at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. and Tervel Dlagnev at 120 kg/264.5 lbs.

Herbert won a World silver medal in 2009 and Dlagnev captured a World bronze medal.

The U.S. is scheduled to compete at the World Cup, a dual-meet event featuring the World's top eight teams, on March 6-7 in Mahachkala, Russia.

The teams competing in order of finish from the 2009 World Championships are Russia, Azerbaijan, Iran, Turkey, Belarus, Ukraine, United States and Uzbekistan.
