It is a travel day on Wednesday, Sept. 9, as the U.S. Freestyle World Team is heading overseas for its final training cycle prior to the World Championships of Wrestling in Herning, Denmark, Sept. 21-27.
All three U.S. teams are winding up their domestic training and will finalize their preparation in another country. This will allow them to acclimate to their European environment, and make their final training adjustments prior to competition.
Men's freestyle is the first style to compete at the World Championships, wrestling from Sept. 21-23. The U.S. Freestyle World Team has left the nation first, heading to Saarbrucken, Germany for an acclimation camp from Sept. 10-16. The team arrives in Herning, Denmark on Sept. 17, and the first weigh-in is on Sept. 20.
"It went well. We are continuing to improve. That is the main thing," said National Freestyle Coach Zeke Jones of the training camps at the Olympic Training Center. "We made great progress to get to where we are right now."
Jones and the freestyle coaching staff have set some specific goals for their training time in Germany.
"It is our final acclimation camp," said Jones. "We will use it to finetune, scout, taper and rest. We want to feel good and get excited. It's the calm before the storm.
Women's freestyle in the next style on the mats in Denmark, from Sept. 23-25. The U.S. women's team will training in Colorado Springs through Sept. 12, then leave for Germany on Sept. 13. They will go to a different city than the men's freestyle team, doing their acclimation in Schifferstadt from Sept. 14-19. The team arrives in Denmark on Sept. 20, with the first weigh in on Sept. 22.
"I feel it has been very productive," said National Women's Coach Terry Steiner of their domestic training camp. "We are focusing on their focus areas. There have been a lot of individual workouts. The coaching staff has done a great job working with each individual."
The German portion of their training will get the team ready for peak performance when they get to Denmark.
"We will tighten things up there. We will rest our minds and bodies. We will get overseas, leave our worries back home and focus on what's coming up. We will get tuned in with our minds and bodies and make sure they are in the right place," said Steiner.
Coach Steiner feels good about how is team has prepared so far.
"We are ready. The attitudes are good. The minor injuries are healing up. We are getting ready at the right time," said Steiner. "The workout partners and other national team members have done a good job. They have high energy, are being very positive and are being unselfish. I would like to thank Team Leader Kim Martori for helping us, and the clubs for all that they do. I give credit to all the coaches and staff, including the athletic trainers and strength coaches, for working together for this team."
Greco-Roman is the final style that is contested in Herning, from Sept. 25-27. The U.S. Greco-Roman team has a final day of training in Colorado Springs on Thursday, Sept. 10, when each World Team member will get in five live matches. The team will go directly to Denmark, but will go to a different city called Aarhus for its acclimation camp from Sept. 15-21. The team will drive to Herning on September 22, with the first weigh in on Sept. 24.
"I think it has gone very well with our training in Colorado Springs," said National Greco-Roman Coach Steve Fraser. "We had a great week of training last week, with very high intensity. We got some good rest this weekend. This week, we will have both high intensity and good rest."
Fraser believes their time in Denmark at the alternate training location in Aarhus will offer many benefits to the team.
"In Denmark, it will be short and sweet. We will be making weight, staying sharp but staying hungry for the competition," said Fraser.
