For a long time, it was a dream for the leaders of wrestling in the state of California. This week, all of the hard work and effort came to fruition.

California USA Wrestling announced to its members that it will proceed with plans to build a 100,000 square-foot sports complex in the city of Tulare.

"We have very good news from the City of Tulare. The application for funding is in process and we are confident that we are very close to our dream," said Duane Morgan, California USA Wrestling state chairperson.

In an email sent to the wrestling family around the state, California USA Wrestling state chairperson Duane Morgan shared the good news.

"Our dream has now become a reality. The City of Tulare will now be the future home of our long awaited sports facility. Plans are in the works, and we extend our most gracious appreciation to the City of Tulare for turning this long awaited dream into reality," said Morgan.

The facility will be where California USA Wrestling will run major wrestling events and other programs.

Tulare is situated in the Central San Joaquin Valley along Highway 99, 45 miles south of Fresno and 60 miles north of Bakersfield. This location will be accessible to the wrestling community from all parts of the state. The state-of-the-art arena will also include dormitories, which will serve the diverse needs of wrestling in the state.

Construction is scheduled to be complete in early 2012. It will be located near the Horizon Outlet Center and has access to major highways.

"This is a statement for wrestling," said Rob Valerio, the state's CFO and membership chairman. "We are here. We aren't going away. We can sustain ourselves and stand by ourselves. We stand together as a team within wrestling."

California USA Wrestling, Inc. has a membership base of over 17,000 athletes, 2,200 coaches, 400 clubs, 300 officials and 200 sanction events. State Championship tournaments are held for boys and girls in age groups ranging from 7-8 years old to 18-19 years old in Folkstyle, Freestyle and Greco wrestling.

"The overall impact a facility such as this will have on our community is phenomenal," remarked Tulare Mayor Craig Vejvoda.

A local development company, with a strong connection to wrestling, Greg Nunley's Great Valley Land Company, will construct the facility and donate a portion of the land involved.

In addition to its wrestling events, the facility can also be used for other sporting events and community activities which will enhance those who live in the region, as well as provide additional income to California USA Wrestling.

"This will bring a tremendous venue for other sporting events and special programs and events to be held in Tulare," said Milt Stowe, Director of Tulare's Department of Recreation and Parks. "The potential of summer sports camps and the training of athletes locally beginning with grammar school age through college aged students, due to the experts that will entering into our community and providing their services to future Olympians."

Vision Statement for the California USA Wrestling facility

This dream is now becoming reality! In recent months, we have been offered a donation of sixteen prime acres in the City of Tulare, with the option of purchasing an additional sixteen adjacent acres. We are in the process of working out the details to acquire possession of this land so that we can begin to realize our vision of constructing a 100,000 square foot facility which will not only be the home of the California Wrestling Hall of Fame, but would provide the organization with the proper facilities to host large scale tournaments and would include seating for 10,000. In addition, the venue will be versatile enough to host other sports such Volleyball, Gymnastics, Martial Arts, Boxing, and Cheerleading! There would, of course, be a state of the art weight room, as well as a Fitness Center. Our Sports Medicine Department would also be housed in the facility, and we are planning on developing a resource-based community outreach program to include not only a sports medicine and athletic training programs, but a nutrition and wellness program as well. We see the potential of being a cooperative learning center for colleges and high schools, as well as information dissemination for health and wellness. A comprehensive sports medicine website link will provide a lot of pertinent information, and will also include a "Trainer's Corner," which will feature a question and answer section. We also envision the addition of dormitories and kitchen facilities which would facilitate the site becoming on official United States Olympic Training Center.

Mission Statement for the California USA Wrestling facility

However, our vision is not limited to athletics. We will invite Regional Office of the American Red Cross and, in cooperation with this organization; we intend to design the facility to be able to qualify as a regional disaster center. As a result, in the event of a local disaster, we would be able to provide a large enough facility prepared to take a lead role in assisting the victims. There are many other possible uses for the site: after school programs, day care, community and business meetings (there are plans for formal meeting/board rooms on the second floor of the building; however, it is imperative that the facility is capable of sustaining itself financially. Therefore, we have decided that the most cost effective way to achieve this is to hire a management company whose responsibilities would include marketing the facility and booking special events into the venue. It is our belief, after discussing these options with a reputable management firm with whom we have done business in the past, that it is reasonable to assume that the site will be quite capable of sustaining itself in the years to come.
