USA Wrestling hosted a press conference on May 28 in Council Bluffs, Iowa to promote the World Team Trials, which will be at the Mid America Center in Council Bluffs, May 30-31.
The featured speakers were:
Twins Trent and Travis Paulson:
The Paulsons discussed returning to wrestle in their hometown of Council Bluffs, Iowa. The Paulsons are the No. 1 seeds at their respective weight classes in freestyle wrestling. The Paulsons were Iowa state high school champions for Lewis Central High School in Council Bluffs and All-Americans for Iowa State University. They train at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln.
Keith Massey:
Massey, who coached the Paulsons at Lewis Central and in area youth programs, talked about what makes them great champions. Massey has been an active leader of the local organizing committee which is hosting the World Team Trials, and discussed the excitement the event has brought to the community.
Tervel Dlagnev:
Dlagnev, a two-time NCAA Div. II champion for the Univ. of Nebraska-Kearney and was the U.S. Nationals runner-up in freestyle, discussed the fan support he will get from the local community at the event. He explained how his University World gold medal last summer helped his confidence and performance, and also spoke about the challenge of facing Steve Mocco at his weight class.
Nebraska head coach Mark Manning
Manning will serve as one of the U.S. freestyle coaches at the World Championships in Denmark. He talked about the quality of the competition and his expectations for the U.S. World Team at the World Championships. He also discussed the impact that the Paulson twins have had on his Nebraska program as coaches on the Husker staff.
