Veteran Mike Zadick has dominated this weight class in recent years. He's made the last two U.S. World Teams before competing in the Olympics in Beijing.
Zadick, a 2006 World silver medalist in freestyle wrestling, looked very good in winning a tough, three period U.S. Nationals finals match against the explosive Shawn Bunch at 60 kg/132 lbs.
By virtue of winning the U.S. Nationals, Zadick has clinched a berth in the finals of the U.S. World Team Trials on May 30-31 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He will meet the winner of the Challenge Tournament in the best-of-3 final round series.
Two-time NCAA champion Matt Valenti has had a solid season and was third at the U.S. Nationals. Former Michigan State wrestler Andy Simmons, younger brother of Nick Simmons, placed fourth in Vegas.
College star Nick Gallick of Iowa State is another top contender after taking fifth at the U.S. Nationals. Drew Headlee was sixth and Kyle Jahn seventh in Vegas.
Veteran Yero Washington also has qualified in this division.
Past NCAA champion Coleman Scott has had an up-and-down season, but wrestled well at the University Nationals to qualify for the World Team Trials. Talented Oklahoma State redshirt Jordan Oliver also qualified in that same event.
Past World University champion Nate Gallick, Nick's older brother, is not expected to wrestle because of an injury.
Iowa Hawkeye All-American Daniel Dennis also has qualified after winning the Northern Plains Regional. Dennis beat 2009 NCAA champion Franklin Gomez and All-American Brandon Precin en route to the title. NCAA runner-up and 2008 University World silver medalist Reece Humphrey was added to the field as a wildcard selection.
