Kelsey Campbell claimed her first U.S. Senior National title this year, upsetting No. 1 ranked Deanna Rix in the finals. Her best previous finish was third in 2008. A member of the Arizona State Univ. men's wrestling team, Campbell is making tremendous progress on the Senior level as she brought silver home from the 2009 U.S. Pan American Championships.
Rix will be competing to make it through the Challenge Tournament hoping to have a re-match with Campbell in the final series. The 2008 U.S. World Team member was also the 2009 Dave Schultz Memorial International champion and Guelph Open champion. She has had success on the Junior and age-group levels as well.
Also competing for the top spot is 2009 University Nationals champion Schuyler Brown. She has had a great season on the FILA Junior and Senior levels, also winning the FILA Junior Nationals and placing third at the U.S. Senior Nationals.
Tatiana Padilla, who has moved up a weight class since winning a World bronze medal in 2008 at 55 kg, will be a tough contender as she looks to make her second World Team. She has also won two FILA Junior World medals, and claimed four Junior National titles.
Other competitors to watch include 2009 University Nationals runner-up Na'Tasha Umemoto, WCWA Nationals champion Tani Ader, 2009 University National bronze medalist Nena Garcia and national placer Firen Gassman. Umemoto, who was fifth at the U.S. Nationals this year, was a national champion in 2004 and the most experienced of the World Team Trials field.
