USA Wrestling has awarded wildcard selections to six freestyle wrestlers to compete at the U.S. World Team Trials, presented by the U.S. Marines, to be held in Council Bluffs, Iowa, May 30-31.
Under the qualifying procedures for the World Team Trials in freestyle wrestling this year, the National Freestyle Coach may nominate as many as one athlete per weight class as wildcards for the World Team Trials.
The wildcard nominations by the National Freestyle Coach were reviewed and approved on Tuesday by a three-member sub-committee appointed by the chairperson of the Freestyle Sport Committee. Athletes who were seeking a wildcard selection were required to contact National Freestyle Coach Zeke Jones by Monday, May 18.
One wildcard at six different weight classes were approved by the committee. There was no wildcard selection at 120 kg/264.5 lbs.
The sub-committee indicated that for 2009, the first year of the new Olympic quadrennium, the wildcard selection process would be more inclusive to include a wider pool of wrestlers with the intent of increasing the depth of the overall athlete pool at this time.
The six wildcards will be placed in the Challenge Tournament portion of the World Team Trials in their weight classes.
