For the first time, a Fellowship of Christian Athletes Breakfast will be hosted alongside USA Wrestling's World Team Trials competition.
The FCA Breakfast will be held at the Holiday Inn - Council Bluffs on Sunday, May 31. Doors open at 6:30 a.m. and breakfast is served from 7:00 a.m. - 8:15 a.m.
This is prior to the final day of the World Team Trials, to be held at the Mid America Center in Council Bluffs. The morning session of the World Team Trials begins at 9:00 a.m.
The speakers at the FCA Breakfast will be 2000 Olympic champion Brandon Slay and 2006 World Champion Bill Zadick. Both serve as Assistant National Freestyle Coaches for USA Wrestling.
The breakfast is hosted by Mike Denny, the head coach at the Univ. of Nebraska-Omaha, and Mark Manning, the head coach at the Univ. of Nebraska-Lincoln.
The cost of the breakfast is $10, which can be purchased in advance or Saturday at the World Team Trials. High School students pay $8 if purchased by May 26 through the FCA in Omaha.
One of the driving forces behind the creation of the FCA Breakfast was Sonny Greenhalgh, the USA Wrestling Board member who retired recently as chairman of the New York Athletic Club.
Because of Greenhalgh's efforts, not only was the breakfast organized, but all of the athletes and coaches from the World Team Trials will be able to attend the breakfast for free.
Greenhalgh has received donations from the following companies to pay for the breakfasts provided free for the athletes and their families:
Dollamur Wrestling Mats
Asics Wrestling Products
Matman Wrestling Products
Herff Jones Rings
Matguard Body Care and Surface Cleaners
Coaches Corner
"I was so moved at the last FCA Breakfast held at the NCAA Championships," said Greenhalgh. "We stopped to take time during a busy weekend to recognize a higher power. There is no reason we can't do that when we have a major wrestling event. We should stop and recognize why we are here. We are all lucky to be there together."
Because of his background in fundraising with the New York AC, Greenhalgh was able to find corporate support for the free breakfasts for the athletes.
"I tried to find out where we could do it with the World Team Trials, and the Holiday Inn is perfect for this. The timing is right on a Sunday morning. The fact that every athlete and coach can attend free is also tremendous. There was no hesitation from the companies I asked to participate," said Greenhalgh.
