COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. - Krista Revelle of Kansas captured the 65 kg/143 lbs. weight class and was named Outstanding Wrestler at the Body Bar FILA Cadet Women's National Championships at the U.S. Olympic Training Center.
Revelle defeated returning champion Ashley Mathews of California (SD Hot Beaches) in her pool competition, 6-0, 6-3. In the gold-medal finals, Revelle stopped Julia Salata by a 3-1, 3-0 margin.
It was the second USA Wrestling national event that she won the Outstanding Wrestler award this season after receiving the top honor at USA Wrestling's PreSeason Folkstyle Nationals this fall.
"I wrestled my hardest. I feel I did good," said Revelle. "I always can improve. I came here to win."
Revelle was a champion at Body Bar Nationals last year in the 7-8 grade division. She is a 15-year-old freshman at Jeff West High School in Meriden, Kansas, and will be eligible for this division again next year.
FILA Cadets are athletes who are 15-17 years old, and include some of the most talented high school athletes in the nation.
Perhaps the toughest weight classes was at 60 kg/132 lbs., which featured a pair of returning champions, Kat Perez of California (Perez Wrestling) and Hanna Martin of Oklahoma (Geary High School).
Martin reached the finals, winning two matches handily to win the bottom pool.
Perez had a difficult pool, which featured 2009 Girls Folkstyle nationals champion Brieana Delgado of South Carolina (Carolina Khaos) and nationally respected Jenna Burkert of New York (USOEC).
Delgado pinned Burkert in the first match. Perez scored a decision over Delgado in their bout. But Burkert came back and pinned Perez, going to the tiebreaking procedures. Delgado and Burkert were tied with five technical points in the round-robin, and Delgado advanced because of her head-to-head victory.
Delgado came back to win the gold-medal finals over Martin in three tough periods, 0-1, 1-0, 2-0. Martin won the first period on a clinch. Delgado scored the only takedown in the second period, and outlasted Martin to score two points in the third.
Delgado was troubled with a stomach ailment throughout the tournament, but she was able to outlast the illness as well as the rugged opponents.
"At these big tournaments, I am always here to have fun and take them one at a time," said Delgado. "It's great if you win and do your job and go to the finals. If you lose, you have to come back strong. (Martin) almost got me a couple of times, but I got it done."
Alex Gomez of the Frontier Titans, who won the USA Wrestling Girls Folkstyle Nationals for the last two years, captured the title at 46 kg/101.25 lbs. by defeating Brittney Taylor of the Bears Wrestling Club, 4-2, 8-1 in the finals.
Two returning champions defended titles uncontested: Kaci Fullinwider of Texas (Cowboy WC) at 40 kg/88 lbs. and Marina Lambert of Virginia (Grizzly WC) at 78 kg/170 lbs.
Erin Golston of Illinois (USOEC) captured the 43 kg/94.75 lbs. title by winning a best-of-three series in two straight matches over Emily Webster (Smith-Cotton Tigers).
Other individual champions were Teshya Alo of Team Hawaii (38 kg/83.75 lbs.), Sophie Hertz of Rosemead (49 kg/108 lbs.), Stacy Martin of Black Widows (52 kg/114.5 lbs.), Roni Goodale of Knights (56 kg / 123.25 lbs.) and Kimberly Spiegel of Team Pennsylvania at 70 kg / 154.25 lbs.
The tournament concludes on Saturday with the FILA Junior Nationals and the youth divisions.
