MINSK, BELARUS - The United States had two medalists on the second day of the Alexander Medved International on Saturday.
Capturing a silver medal at 84 kg/185 lbs. was Travis Pascoe (Corvallis, Ore./Sunkist Kids). Winning a bronze medal at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. was Trent Paulson (Lincoln, Neb./Sunkist Kids).
Pascoe won four straight matches to qualify for the gold-medal finals. Among his big wins came in the semifinals, when he defeated Arsen Magomedov of Russia, 5-1, 0-1, 2-0. Pascoe was defeated in the gold-medal finals by Ahmet Gulhan of Turkey, 0-1, 0-3.
Pascoe was a NCAA All-American for Nebraska, and is on the coaching staff at Oregon State.
Paulson had a 5-1 record in the tournament. He won his first four matches, losing in the semifinals to Gasan Magomedov of Russia, 3-2, 1-3, 0-7. He rebounded strongly, by winning his bronze-medal match over Elmer Gambarov of Azerbaijan, 1-0, 1-0
Paulson was a NCAA champion for Iowa State.
The U.S. also had another athlete in a bronze-medal match, as Bryce Hasseman (Iowa City, Iowa/New York AC) placed fifth at 84 kg/185 lbs. Hasseman finished with a 3-2 record. He was defeated in the bronze-medal match by Alan Bzykau of Belarus, 0-2, 0-3.
"Overall, our men wrestled well today. Pushing three of our four American wrestlers into the semi finals was a good indication of where we are in March," said National Freestyle Coach Zeke Jones.
Jones was impressed with the progress of the wrestlers who competed on Saturday.
"Travis Pascoe had a nice run to the finals and Trent Paulson competed well. More than their outcomes, we are wrestling better strategically, especially on the edge of the mat, the end of the period, and in our 1st and 2nd clinch position," said Jones. "We've also got to help Bryce Hasseman to compete more consistently and focus on Keith Gavin developing his freestyle skills offensively and counter offensively. We're still not there yet so until then we must make improving everyday our top priority."
2008 U.S. Olympian Steve Mocco (Iowa City, Iowa/New York AC) is the only American competing on Sunday. He opens his competition at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. against Ghazimurad Mutiev of Russia.
"Tomorrow's competition will be a good test for Steve. We expect him to be ready to compete strong and raise up to the challenge," said Jones.
