Michigan Sports Hall of Fame announces the Class of 2008

DETROIT (June 20, 2008) - The Michigan Sports Hall of Fame (MSHOF) today announced the Class of 2008 at a new event at the MSHOF Road Trip '08 mobile interactive experience at GM River Days on the Detroit River. As selected by statewide sporting media, MSHOF members, selected sports administrators of university and professional teams and the MSHOF Board of Directors, and ratified by Karl Fava C.P.A., the inductees are:
Long-time award-winning Grand Rapids Press sports editor, Bob Becker
The voice of the Detroit Pistons and MSU football, George Blaha
Olympic and Wide World of Sports' broadcasting legend, Bill Flemming
Hazel Park H.S. star, U-M All-American and Olympic gold medalist, Steve Fraser
Youth sports champion and Detroit Red Wings co-owner, Marian Ilitch
Flint Southwestern H.S. star and U-M football and baseball great, Rick Leach
Mercy H.S. and LPGA champion and the first LPGA player to shoot 60, Meg Mallon
All-Pro Detroit Lion wide receiver and fastest in NFL to record 600 catches, Herman Moore
Long-time Detroit Lion and member of NFL 1980's All-Decade team, Eddie Murray
NASCAR team owner champion and successful automotive businessman, Jack Roush
U-M champion coach and Olympic swimming coaching legend, Jon Urbanchek
NOTE: Long-time local amateur hockey supporter and NHL team owner, Peter Karmanos, will also be formally inducted with the MSHOF Class of 2008. Mr. Karmanos was elected as a member of the Class of 2007, but was unable to attend the induction ceremony due to a previously scheduled commitment.

"We look forward to the annual induction ceremony in February of 2009 when our newest class will be formally enshrined."

STEVE FRASER
Fraser is America's First Olympic Gold Medalist in Greco-Roman wrestling and is currently the National - Olympic Greco Coach for the United States. Fraser competed in football, track and field, and wrestling as a high school student. He won a wrestling scholarship to the University of Michigan in 1976. He won national Greco-Roman championships in the 198-pound division in 1982 and 1983, when he also won a gold medal at the Pan-American Games.Fraser won the national freestyle title in 1984 but finished second in Greco-Roman championship. However, he placed first in the 1984 Olympic trials and then became the first U. S. athlete ever to win an Olympic gold medal in Greco-Roman wrestling. Inducted into the U. S. Wrestling Hall of Fame and the UM Hall of Honor.
DETROIT (October 9, 2008) - The Michigan Sports Hall of Fame (MSHOF) announced today that the Class of 2008 will be formally enshrined at the 54th Annual MSHOF Induction Ceremony Presented by Big Boy on Monday, Feb. 9, 2009, at the Max M. Fisher Music Center.
Tickets are $250 for a V.I.P package which includes prime seating, a special 5 p.m. reception with inductees and MSHOF members, a 6 p.m. strolling supper and the 7:30 p.m. induction ceremony in Orchestra Hall. A $150 ticket* (*$75 for ages eight to 12) is also available that includes the strolling supper and the induction ceremony. Sports fans, youth sport groups and others will again have the opportunity to purchase a $35 MSHOF "Upper Deck" balcony-level ticket to the 7:30 p.m. induction ceremony including a limited-edition commemorative Class of 2008 poster courtesy of the Detroit News. Ticket can be purchased by calling 248-473-0656.
The prestigous event will also feature the announcement of the MSHOF Wright & Filipis Courage Award presented annually to a sporting figure who has demonstrated dedication and perseverance in the athletic arena. Other event highlights include a Hollywood-style red-carpet entrance on Woodward Avenue complete with special commemorative photographs provided by the Detroit News.
"We are extremely proud to once again host the State of Michigan's sports version of the Academy Awards® honoring a prestigious group of extraordinary athletes who have provided so many great moments for sports fans throughout the state of Michigan," said Tony Michaels, MSHOF Chairman.
