The first session of the American Airlines New York Athletic Club International Open completed with gold-medal finals and final roundrobin matches set in all weight classes in Greco-Roman and women's freestyle.

Two members of the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team have qualified for a spot in the finals.

In Greco-Roman, 2008 U.S. Olympian Spenser Mango (St. Louis, Mo./Gator WC) will face Kiyharu Hirao of Japan at 55 kg/121 lbs. It is a rematch from the USA vs. Japan dual meet on Thursday night, won by Mango, 5-0, 7-0.

To reach the finals, Mango needed three periods to defeat Vyugar Ragymov of Ukraine, 5-0, 5-6, 2-1. Ragymov hit a five-point throw in the second period to force a third period, where Mango won with a clutch two-point turn from the par terre.

Mango was eighth in the 2008 Olympic Games. Ragymov was a 2007 European bronze medalist and won a silver medal at the 2007 World Military Games.

In women's freestyle, 2008 U.S. Olympian Ali Bernard (New Ulm, Minn./Gator WC) will compete for the gold at 72 kg/158.5 lbs.

Bernard will face Canada's Pam Wilson, who upset 2008 U.S. World Team member Stephany Lee (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) in the semifinals, 1-0, 0-1, 4-0.

Bernard was fifth in the 2008 Olympic Games. She defeated Japan's Asuku Sano in the semifinals, 2-2, 4-2.

Already clinching the gold medal in the women's division was Alyssa Lampe (Tomahawk, Wis./Sunkist Kids) at 48 kg/105.5 lbs., who won both of her round-robin matches over Canada's Coralie Dixon.

Two members of the 2008 U.S. Women's World Team have reached the finals, Deanna Rix (S. Berwick, Maine/New York AC) at 59 kg/130 lbs. and Elena Pirozkhov (Colorado Springs, Colo./Gator WC).

Rix will face Canada's Amanda Gerhardt, who she defeated in an exhibition match in Bethlehem, Pa. on Friday night by pin.

Pirozkhov will have to win her final roundrobin match against Veronica Carlson (Addison, Ill./New York AC) to win the gold. In an earlier round robin match, Pirozkhov defeated 2008 U.S. World Team member Alaina Berube (River Falls, Wis./New York AC), 1-1, 1-0. Pirozkhov wrestled at the World Championships at 67 kg, while Berube competed there at 63 kg.

Other U.S. women in the finals are 2008 University World champion Katherine Fulp-Allen (El Granada, Calif./New York AC) at 51 kg/112.25 pounds and Sharon Jacobson (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) at 55 kg/121 lbs.

There will be an all-USA Greco-Roman finals at 74 kg/163 lbs., as Cheney Haight (Orem, Utah/New York AC) will battle Jake Fisher (Platte City, Mo./New York AC). Both are USOEC resident athletes at Northern Michigan. Haight was a runner-up at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials. Fisher is the returning NYAC International champion at this weight class.

Also reaching the finals is 2008 Junior World bronze medalist Pete Kowalczuk (Oak Park, Ill./ Sunkist Kids), who will face veteran Oleksander Chernetskyi of Ukraine at 120 kg/264.5 lbs.
