ISTANBUL, Turkey - 2008 University World champion Sam Hazewinkel (Springboro, Ohio/Sunkist Kids) won a silver medal at the Vehbi Emre Grand Prix of Greco-Roman wrestling on Saturday.
Hazenwinkel was defeated in the finals by Rustem Hammet of Turkey by pin.
"Sam wrestled a nice tournament," said National Greco-Roman Coach Steve Fraser. "This was a great tournament for him to determine what he needs to improve on."
Hazewinkel had won three consecutive matches to reach the championship.
Hazewinkel won his first two matches by sweeping the first two periods in victories over Ashkat of Kazakhstan and Hafizov of Azerbaijan.
"Sam wrestled with great intensity and great par terre in his first match," said National Greco-Roman Coach Steve Fraser. "Sam had a superb match against a tough Uzbekistan wrestler, outmoving him on his feet and wrestling with great defense from par terre. Sam hit an arm throw on his opponent, and won some great scrambles.
In the semifinals, Hazewinkel pinned Guenetadze of Georgia in the second period.
"It was a great match," said Fraser. "Sam won the first period, but the officials reviewed the video and give it to the Georgian. Sam had a great par terre defense in the second period, and had to turn the Georgian to win the period. He turned him with a front headlock, then threw in a half nelson and pinned him."
Placing fifth was 2002 World champion and 2008 Olympian Dremiel Byers (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army at 120 kg/264.5 lbs.
Byers won his first match over Yusef Yucel of Turkey, then was pinned in the second match by 2008 Junior World champion Riza Kayaalp of Turkey. When Kayaalp qualified for the finals, Byers was drawn back into the repechage rounds.
"Byers wrestled very smart in the first match, using a nice straight lift," said Fraser. "In the second match, he double-jumped in the first period. In the second period, he was attempting a front headlock and slipped, getting caught on his back and pinned."
Byers won his first repechage match, stopping Yavuz Guvendi of Turkey. In the bronze-medal match, he was beaten by Iosev Chugoshvili of Belarus.
Two U.S. wrestlers lost in their first matches, C.C. Fisher (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. and 2008 Olympian T.C. Dantzler (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 84 kg/185 lbs. Dantzler is now competing up one weight class from where he wrestled at the Olympics last year.
