USA Wrestling is excited to announce that there will be two USA vs. Canada women's freestyle exhibition matches during the halftime break at the Oregon State vs. Iowa State Div. I college dual meet in Corvallis, Ore. at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 18.
Two members of the 2008 U.S. Women's World Team, Whitney Conder (Colorado Springs, Colo./Gator WC) and Elena Pirozkhova (Colorado Springs, Colo./Gator WC) will compete against top young stars from Team Canada.
At 55 kg/121 lbs., Conder will face Miranda Dick of Canada. Conder was a 2007 Junior World Champion and was third in the 2008 U.S. World Team Trials. Dick was a 2008 University World champion
At 67 kg/147.5 lbs., Pirozkhova will battle Stacie Anaka of Canada. Pirozkhova was eighth at the 2008 World Championships and was a 2008 University World champion. Anaka was a 2007 Junior World bronze medalist.
"It is important for USA Wrestling to expose our women's program to the high school and college wrestling fan," said National Women's Coach Terry Steiner. "We are placing some international matches within prominent college duals across the country. It is great to promote our program and gives the fans some insight into elite women's wrestling."
The U.S. athletes will be coached by USA Wrestling Assistant National Women's Coach and Developmental Coach Izzy Izboinikov, and the Canadian wrestlers will be coached by Canadian National Women's Coach Leigh Vierling.
This is the second of these special USA Wrestling women's exhibition bouts held during major college dual meets this year. The first was held at the Lehigh vs. Michigan dual meet in Bethlehem, Pa. on November 21. U.S. wrestlers Pirozkhova and Deanna Rix (S. Berwick, Maine/New York AC) won bouts against Canadian opponents at that event. Additional women's wrestling exhibitions are being planned for other college dual meets later in the season.
Iowa State is currently ranked No. 3 in the nation, after a third-place finish at the NWCA National Duals. All 10 of Iowa State's starters hold a top-20 ranking nationally in the most recent InterMat ranking. Leading the way is No. 1 Jake Varner at 197 pounds, No. 2 Nick Gallick at 141 pounds and No. 3 David Zabriskie at 285 pounds.
Members of the 1973 NCAA Championship Runner-Up Oregon State wrestling squad will return and be honored prior to the start of the meet against Iowa State.
Single-meet tickets are on sale now through the Oregon State Ticket Office located in Gill Coliseum at $7 for adults and $5 for youth/seniors.
