Jason Townsend, who serves as Manager of Developing Wrestling Styles for USA Wrestling, has resigned from his position. His final day on the national staff will be Feb. 27.
Townsend will initially be moving to Las Vegas, Nev., where his wife Leilani is continuing her final year of medical school. The Townsends plan to move to Athens, Ohio in the summer, where Leilani will begin her residency.
"We were hoping to get a residency position in Colorado where I am working, but that did not work out. I still plan on being an integral part of the USA Grappling program and being an asset to USA Wrestling as a volunteer in the future," said Townsend.
USA Wrestling's programs in the developing styles, which includes Grappling and Beach Wrestling, will continue to be overseen by Gary Abbott, the Director of Communications and Special Projects. Abbott will be the main contact for these styles as USA Wrestling determines the future direction of these programs.
Townsend will remain active in the USA Grappling program as a volunteer, working to continue the growth and development of the sport in the United States.
He also remains a member of FILA's World Grappling Committee, which oversees the sport internationally on behalf of the international wrestling federation.
Townsend served as coach for the 2007 U.S. Grappling World Team which dominated the competition at the World Wrestling Games in Antalya, Turkey. The USA won a World gold medal in all nine weight classes.
In his role as Manager of Developing Wrestling Styles, Townsend led the delegation and coached the 2008 U.S. Grappling World Team to titles in both the No-Gi and Gi styles at the first Grappling World Championships held in Lucerne, Switzerland.
Prior to joining USA Wrestling, Townsend was the founder and President of the International Submission Wrestling Association. Townsend's background in coaching Grappling includes coaching positions with Xtreme Couture MMA and Marc Laimon's Cobra Kai jiu-jitsu.
Townsend served as an assistant wrestling coach at Cal-State Fullerton from 2000-2005. He was a varsity wrestler for Syracuse Univ. and Hofstra Univ. Townsend was a two-time Maryland state high school champion, and was an All-American in freestyle at the Junior Nationals and Espoir Nationals.
