The 2009 Dave Schultz Memorial International Open will celebrate its 11th year of competition, highlighting some of the best wrestlers in the world.
This year's tournament features top athletes from approximately 15 countries.
The event will take place at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs February 5-8. The competition began in February 1999. USA Wrestling, working with Nancy Schultz and the Dave Schultz Wrestling Foundation, created an international wrestling tournament in honor of the late Olympic and World champion Dave Schultz. This year marks the 13th anniversary of his tragic death.
The tournament includes an abundance of wrestlers from some of the top wrestling nations and athletes in the world. Nations expected to take part include: Bulgaria, Canada, Ecuador, Spain, France, Germany, India, Japan, Moldova, Poland, Russia, Sierra Leon, Sweden, Ukraine, and the United States. Other nations are possible participants.
Numerous World and Olympic champions have competed in this event, including 2008 Olympic champion Henry Cejudo of the USA, who wrestled here in 2005. Past Dave Schultz Memorial champions who have become Olympic champions include Brandon Slay and Rulon Gardner of the United States, Armen Nazarian of Bulgaria, Mijain Lopez of Cuba, Carol Huynh of Canada, and Andrea Minguzzi of Italy.
Adult all-season pass for the three-day tournament are $15. An adult one day ticket is $10 per day and adult session tickets are $5 for Session I through Preliminaries and $8 for Session II through the Finals. Tickets for high school students (with I.D.) and senior citizens (62 and over) are $5 per day. Youth (5-14) tickets are $4 per day. Coaches are admitted free with five paid wrestlers.
There will be gold-medal finals all three nights of the championships. These are the weight classes that will be competing each day:
Friday, Feb. 6: Greco-Roman (55 kg, 60 kg, 66 kg, 74 kg)
Saturday, Feb. 7: Freestyle (55 kg, 60 kg, 66 kg); Greco-Roman (84 kg, 96 kg, 120 kg); Women's freestyle (51 kg, 59 kg, 67 kg)
Sunday, Feb. 8: Freestyle (74 kg, 84 kg, 96 kg, 120 kg); Women's freestyle (48 kg, 55 kg, 63 kg, 72 kg)
In addition to the international competitors, many top U.S. wrestlers in all three styles are expected to compete. More information about U.S. and international entries will be published next week.
