Ohio beats defending champ Illinois to win Pool C at Junior Freestyle Duals

OKLAHOMA CITY - Ohio knocked off defending champion Illinois on Saturday night to claim top honors in Pool C at the 2009 Junior Freestyle Duals on the campus of Oklahoma City University.

Illinois seeks a fourth consecutive Junior Duals title in freestyle. On Friday, Illinois won its third straight Greco-Roman title.

2008 runner-up Iowa was dominant in five duals to win Pool D, while New Jersey, third last summer, took Pool A. Pool B went to Minnesota 1, who edged Oklahoma 1, 33-32.

The eight teams in the championship bracket - top two from each of
four Pools - include Ohio, Illinois, Minnesota 1, Oklahoma 1, New Jersey 1, Missouri, Iowa and California.

Illinois beat Iowa, 39-23, in the championship match last June. New Jersey beat Minnesota, 33-27, for third; Oklahoma beat Missouri for fifth and Kansas beat Pennsylvania for seventh.

Wrestling begins at 9 a.m. (CST) Sunday morning with the finals scheduled for 3:30 p.m.

Pool A
New Jersey 1 took Pool A with a 6-0 mark. Missouri went 5-1, edging Wisconsin, 31-29, in the opening session. A pin by Stephen Doty at 171 and technical fall by John Eblen at 189 gave Missouri a 31-23 lead.

Pool B
Minnesota went 6-0 to win Pool A., aided by a 33-32 win over Oklahoma 1. Minnesota won 10 of the 15 bouts but gave up pins at 119, 145 and 160 and technical falls at 125 and 189. Dallas Bailey pinned Danny Zilverberg at 160 to give the hosts a 25-24 advantage. Minnesota got decisions by Kevin Steinhaus at 171 and Joel Bauman at 215 and Jake Kettler at 285. Oklahoma led 31-30 going into the final match where Kettler beat Blake Bean, 1-1, 1-0.

Kansas and North Dakota wrestled to a 34-34 tie on Saturday. Kansas won 8 of the 15 bouts but gave up two pins and a technical fall in the final three bouts.

North Dakota won 9 of 15 matches against Georgia, yet still lost 34-31.

Pool C
Ohio was 6-0 in Pool C, knocking off Illinois (5-1) on Saturday night.
Ohio received five forfeits, had three pins and four technical falls in a 65-4 win over Tennesseee on Friday night. They finished Saturday night with a 33-25 victory over the defending champs from Illinois. Ohio won 10 of the 15 bouts including David Taylor's, 1-0, 3-0, decision of Ellis Colem an at 145 pounds. Logan Stieber edged Jon Morrison, 1-0, 2-0, at 125 pounds. Ohio has lost eight individual matches - five came against Illinois - in six duals entering Sunday.

Pool D
Iowa won Pool D with five easy wins, scoring at least 50 in all five and beating Florida, 63-3. Iowa faces off with Illinois first thing Sunday morning.

California won 8 matches to edge Florida, 35-30, on Saturday morning. California led 16-1 after winning the first four bouts and got key pins from Cody Rodebaugh at 145 and Austin Moorehe ad at 189.
