UPDATED: Defending champ Illinois perfect after two days at Junior National Greco-Roman Duals

OKLAHOMA CITY - Two more duals, two more wins for Illinois.

The reigning Junior Greco-Roman champions beat Kansas, 43-21, then hammered California, 53-8, Thursday afternoon to remain perfect through two days at the 2009 Junior Greco-Roman Duals on the campus of Oklahoma City University.

After going 5-0 to win Pool A, Illinois, winners of the last two Greco titles, used five straight victories from 145 thru 189 to pull away from Kansas.

A round later California, last year's silver medalist, was no match. Garrett Furtado beat Nick Fontenneta, 1-0, 2-3, 4-1, at 98 pounds. It would be California's only victory in the dual.

Minnesota 1, Florida and Wisconsin also stayed unbeaten with two dual wins in the first two rounds of the Championship bracket.

Illinois faces Wisconsin and Minnesota 1 takes on Florida in this morning's semifinals.

Florida routed Iowa, 47-18, to open the afternoon. Iowa managed just three wins in 15 bouts. Tyler Liberatore pinned All-American Joe Colon in 1:21 at 130 and All-American Joe Cozart won a 3-2, 3-1, match with Michael Kelly at 152.

The Sunshine State had a little more trouble with Arizona in Round 2.
With Florida leading 28-27 entering 215 pounds, Arizona's Diego Bravo picked up a three-period victory to give his squad a 30-29 advantage heading to 285 pounds.

However, a 22-second pin by Donovan Green allowed Florida to keep its perfect record intact.

Minnesota 1, third a year ago, and Florida square off on Friday morning in a battle of unbeatens.

Minnesota 1 won 11 of 15 bouts in a 43-20 victory over Arizona including Drew Lexvold's 6-2, 3-1, win over 2008 Junior national champion Luke Goettl at 135.

Against Iowa a round later, Minnesota won the first five bouts before Colon pinned Kyle Leduc at 130 and Brett Baumbach pinned Lexvold at 135 to cut the lead to 16-11. Dylan Ness (140) and Bobby Fisher (145) responded with technical falls and Pat Smith (152) had a tough three-period victory over Kelly to put Minnesota up 27-14 and they went on to a 36-20 win.

Wisconsin also won five consecutive from 140 to 171 in a 43-19 win over California. Cadet national champion Kalvin York won a tough, three-period match with a pin at 1:31 against All-American Tyler Sheridan. Kyle Crain (160) and Ben Provisor (171) followed with pins and Wisconsin was off to the races.

The seventh place finisher from 2008 also had little difficulty in beating Kansas, 49-15, to finish their day.

Friday morning's session begins at 9 a.m. (CST). The championship is scheduled for 11 a.m.

Freestyle gets underway at 6 p.m. on Friday.

Washington's Jacob Trotter and Wisconsin's Ben Provisor each have five pins to lead the pack with Wisconsin leading the team race with 24 in a combined 24:19. Florida has 22 pins in 24:38 … There have been 7 pins in 20 seconds or less. Florida's Shakendrick Sanders has a 12-second pin with Washington's20Clint Powers registering a 13-second finish … Wisconsin 125-pounder Cullan Morrissey has the most individual victories through two days with eight.

THURSDAY MORNING UPDATE: Illinois, Florida, Minnesota 1 and Wisconsin win their pools

OKLAHOMA CITY - Defending champion Illinois went unchallenged during Pool competition and Florida, Minnesota 1 and Wisconsin also went unbeaten as the 2009 Junior Greco-Roman Duals got underway on Wednesday at Oklahoma City University.

Winners of two-straight titles, Illinois opened with wins over Tennessee, Minnesota 2, North Dakota, Iowa and Michigan Red.

Competition continues this afternoon with the championship finals set for Friday.

Freestyle hits the mats on Friday night - with the finals set for Sunday.

A quick look at Greco-Roman Pool competition:

Pool A

Tennessee, Minnesota 2, North Dakota and Iowa won a combined three matches against Illinois in Pool A. The reigning champions outscored their five Pool opponents, 259-48.

The most competitive Pool of the four saw Iowa, North Dakota and Michigan Red each go 3-2 with Iowa earning second on a tiebreaker.
After escaping Michigan Red in their opener, the Iowans, fourth a year ago, could not get by North Dakota. Cadet All-American Scott Shiller picked up a technical fall at 189 to give North Dakota a 31-25 advantage. ND also got a big wi n at 135 by Trevor Johnson over All-American Brett Baumbach at 135. After a pair of 2-0 periods, Johnson exploded to win 11-3 in the final period.

Michigan Red beat North Dakota, 40-20, to forge a three-way tie for second.

Pool B

Florida had an easy go of it in Pool B. With the exception of a 40-27 win over Pool runner-up Kansas, Florida dominated Washington, Oklahoma, Missouri and New Jersey. In the win over Kansas, Brandon's Rossi Bruno beat 2008 Junior Greco runner-up Sharky Slyter, 1-0, 2-0, at 125. Shakendrick Sanders, a Junior national champion in 2008, had a 12-second pin in a 50-16 thrashing of Oklahoma.

Pool C

Minnesota 1, third a year ago, cruised to first in Pool C. California, the runner-up in 2008, suffered just one loss - to Minnesota - and had a down-to-the-wire match with Colorado. After falling behind, 25-5, to Colorado in the opening session on Wednesday, the Californians rallied with seven straight victories to win 34-29. Tyler (152) and Lucas (171)Sheridan each had pins during the run.

Colorado threatened Minnesota before falling 37-24. Trevor Fitzler beat Kevin Steinhaus, 2-0, 1-0, at 171 to cut the deficit to 28-19 but Craig Kelliher came right back with a 7-0, 7-0, technical fall at 189 to clinch it. Cadet national champion Dylan Ness (140) and All-American Bobby Fisher (145) had back-to-back pins for Minnesota.
Nebraska, Indiana and Michigan Blue rounded out Pool C.

Pool D

Wisconsin beat Arizona, 37-27, on Thursday morning in a battle for the top two spots in Pool D. Wisconsin won five of the last seven bouts including a technical fall at 160 pounds from 2008 Cadet national champion Kalvin York and pins by Ben Provisor (171) and Nikko Bogojevic (285). Jesse Thielke (119), also a Cadet Greco champion last summer, had a technical fall for the winners. Luke Goettl, a Junior champion in 2008, had a technical fall for an Arizona team that finished with just one loss in a Pool that also included Georgia, Texas, Virginia and Delaware.
