ASICS Kids Nationals preview

OREM, Utah - The 2009 USA Wrestling ASICS Kids National Freestyle and Greco-Roman Championships will be held at the McKay Events Center on June 29 - July 1 in Orem, Utah.

The nation's best 9-14 year old wrestlers will be battling for national titles and All-American honors in three age-divisions: Intermediate (9-10), Novice (11-12) and Schoolboy/girl (13-14).

It is the second straight year this event has been held in Orem.

This is the final event in the coveted USA Wrestling Kids Triple Crown. Each year, USA Wrestling honors athletes who are able to win national titles at their age-level in all three styles: folkstyle, Greco-Roman and freestyle.

The online registration deadline for the Kids Freestyle and Greco-Roman Nationals is Monday, June 29 at 1:00 p.m. CST.

Weigh-ins for the Greco-Roman competition will be Monday, June 29 with the competition set for Tuesday, June 30. Freestyle weigh-ins are Tuesday, June 30 with the wrestling taking place on Wednesday, July 1.

The first leg of the Triple Crown was the USA Wrestling Kids Folkstyle Nationals, held April in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Winners in that event are eligible to pursue the Triple Crown this year in Orem.

All participants in this event must have participated in at least one style at their USA Wrestling Kids Regional Championships tournament.

2008 NCAA Division I champions Brent Metcalf and Angel Escobedo are former USA Wrestling Kids Triple Crown winners.

A total of 10 wrestlers captured USA Wrestling Triple Crowns in 2008.

There were two wrestlers in the Intermediate division (ages 9-10) to capture the Triple Crown last year: Anthony Artalona of Florida (60) and A.J. Jaffe of Illinois (70).

The four Triple Crown winners in the Novice age group (ages 11-12) last year included Ty Pelot of Wisconsin (60), Dante Rodriguez of Nebraska (70), Matthew Kolodzik of Ohio (75) and Joey Nelson of Wisconsin (95).

The four Schoolboy wrestlers (ages 13-14) to capture the Triple Crown last year were Sam Brancale of Minnesota (77), Ryan Cone of Wisconsin (152), Joe Scanlan of Iowa (175) and Eric Mason of Kansas (210).
Dante Rodriguez of Nebraska has a chance to repeat as a Triple Crown winner after winning a Kids Folkstyle National title earlier this year in the Schoolboy division at 70 pounds.

USA Wrestling's Triple Crown program was created in 1997, and the total number of Triple Crown winners has reached 112.

Riley Adamson of New Mexico won the Kids Triple Crown an amazing six times (1999-2004). Athletes who have won the Triple Crown two times are Jon Dahl of Minnesota, Angel Escobedo of Indiana, Joe Zlatnick of Kansas, Atticus Disney of Kansas, Jeff Olsen of Georgia, David Craig of Florida, Sharky Slyter of Kansas, Oliver Pierce of Texas, Glenn Climmons of Georgia, Mitch Sliga of Indiana, Ryan Cone of Wisconsin and Joe Scanlan of Iowa.
