USA Wrestling has announced that long-time state leader Archie Randall of Mustang, Okla. has received the President's Award for 2009.
Through this unique program, USA Wrestling brings a state leader to the World Championships as part of the U.S. delegation. Randall will join Team USA at the 2009 World Wrestling Championships in Herning, Denmark, Sept. 21-27.
Randall has served as the State Chairperson for USA Wrestling Oklahoma since 1993, and serves in a leadership role on numerous USA Wrestling committees. He is also the head wrestling coach at Oklahoma City University, which fields varsity teams in both men's and women's wrestling.
"This is one of the greatest opportunities I have had in my career," said Randall. "I can go to the World Championships, watch the event and be a part of the U.S. delegation. It will help me in so many ways. I want to know what is happening at that next level. I'm hoping in the next few years some of our OCU women wrestlers will be on U.S. World and Olympic teams."
Randall is the Chairperson of the State Chairpersons Council. He is a member of the USA Wrestling Executive Committee and the Junior Olympic Wrestling Committee. Other standing committees which he serves on at this time are the Freestyle Sports Committee, the Women's Sports Committee and the Sports Science Committee.
He has been a coach with Oklahoma's Junior and Cadet Nationals team for two decades. Randall has mentored numerous Cadet and Junior National champions and All-Americans during these years. He is proud that he coached the first Oklahoma team to the Cadet Nationals in 1990 in Battle Creek, Mich., leading the team to 21 All-American honors and five individual champions.
Randall has served as event director and host for the National Junior Duals for 13 years, holding the event in Oklahoma City, Edmond, Enid and Lawton. The National Junior Duals have been at Oklahoma City University for the last four years. During the last two years, he has also been the event director and host of the USA Wrestling Girls Folkstyle Nationals, which is also held at Oklahoma City University.
Randall was the 2002 USA Wrestling Developmental Coach of the Year and the 1996 USA Wrestling State Chairperson of the Year.
"Archie is being recognized for his years and years of service," said USA Wrestling President Jim Ravannack. "He has put in countless hours as a volunteer, and has been dedicated to the Oklahoma program. He holds many important positions as a state chairperson. Archie has also trained many of our Senior level athletes when they were in high school. He deserves this and it is our honor to have him at the World Championships."
The President's Award program began in 2007. The USA Wrestling President recommends the nominee to past USA Wrestling presidents, and the choice is ratified by the Executive Committee.
Past President's Award winners are Mike Juby of Kansas in 2007 and Duane Morgan of California in 2008.
"This program gives state leaders the chance to see what the National Governing Body has to do. It shows why the grassroots program is critical to the success of our World-level teams. We should all be shooting for the same goal - to support Team USA. The grassroots programs are a big part of Team USA. Many people do not realize that. It is all of us over there competing at the World Championships," said Randall.
Randall is a legend in Oklahoma as a coach. He started the new wrestling program at Oklahoma City University in the 2006-2007 year, and the men's team placed in the top 12 at the NAIA Championships for the last three years.
