ANKARA, Turkey - Jimmy Chase (Carol Stream, Ill./Pinnacle School of Wrestling) placed fifth at 60 kg/132 lbs. in Greco-Roman, the top U.S. individual performance on the first day of the Junior World Championships.

In his bronze-medal match, Chase was beaten by Grigory Yavruyan of Russia, 0-4, 0-1. He finished the tournament with a 2-2 record.

Chase opened the tournament with a loss to Rahman Bilici of Turkey, 0-3, 0-1. When Bilici reached the gold-medal finals, Chase was drawn back into the repechage rounds.

"In his first match, Jimmy did really well against the Turk. He lost in two periods, but it was close. That guy is beating everybody, including the Russian to make the finals," said Anderson.

Chase won two straight repechage matches to qualify for the bronze medal bout. He stopped Lemur Temrov of Ukraine, 0-6, 4-4, 4-0, then beat Jussi-Pekka Niemisto of Finland, 3-0, 0-2, 2-1.

"In the wrestlebacks, Jimmy wrestled well. He was scoring points and showing that he really wants it. He is doing a great job here," said Anderson.

Chase graduated from Glenbard North High School in Illinois this year, and will attend Binghamton Univ. in the fall. He was also a member of the 2008 U.S. Junior World Greco-Roman Team at 55 kg.

Max Nowry (Wheeling, Ill.,USOEC) placed sixth at 50 kg/110 lbs., finishing the event with a 2-2 record. He opened with a victory over Victor Ciobanu of Moldova, 7-0, 2-0 then lost to eventual champion Artur Umbetkaliyev of Kazakhstan, 3-4, 0-6. His first repechage match was a victory over Emanuel Serban of Romania, 0-2, 2-0, 2-0. He was eliminated with a loss to Khurshud Babashov of Azerbaijan, 0-6, 0-1.

Nowry recently completed his freshman year at Northern Michigan Univ., where he is a member of the U.S. Olympic Education Center Greco-Roman program.

The other U.S. wrestler to compete on Tuesday, Tyrell Fortune, Portland, Ore. (Peninsula) went 0-2 and did not place at 96 kg/211.5 lbs.

Four U.S. Greco-Roman wrestlers weighed in and received their draws for Wednesday's competition.

Perhaps the toughest first round draw went to Peter Kowalczuk (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) who drew Riza Kayaalp of Turkey at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. Kayaalp was a 2008 Junior World champion and competed in the 2008 Olympic Games. Kowalczuk was a 2008 University World bronze medalist and is competing in his second Junior World Championships.
