U.S. sends talented teams to Junior World Championships in Turkey August 4-9

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The U.S. will send talented teams to this year's Junior World Championship, which will be held on August 4-9 in Ankara, Turkey.
The top 16-20 year old wrestlers compete at this event for a chance at a Junior World honor. U.S. wrestlers in all three styles, Greco-Roman, Men's Freestyle, and Women's Freestyle on the Junior level, will be competing against the world's best competitors in Turkey. All three teams are currently training in preparation of the World Championship.
Adeline Gray, the 2008 Junior World Champion, will be returning to the Junior Worlds to defend her title at 67kg. The women's team has three other returning athletes from the 2008 team as well, Victoria Anthony at 44kg (who placed fifth in the 2008 Worlds), Helen Maroulis at 55kg (Bronze medalist at the 2008 Worlds), and Schuyler Brown at 59 kg.
Also competing on the Women's Junior World Team this year are CC Weber at 48 kg, Trinity Plessinger at 51kg, Veronica Carlson at 63 kg, and Christen Paysse at 72kg.
Coaching the women's team is USA Freestyle Women's developmental Coach Izzy Izboinikov of Colorado Springs, Colorado plus Alex Conti of Fredonia, NY, and Donnie Stephens of Arcadia, California.
"We have a very experienced team," said Coach Izboinikov. "My main concern is being 100% healthy. By the time the Junior World's comes, we will have in three camps under our belt. We will count on our experience to help lead to success."
The 2009 U.S. Junior World Greco-Roman Team has three returning athletes from the 2008 Junior World Team. These members are Jimmy Chase at 60kg, Ben Provisor at 74 kg, and Peter Kowalczuk at 120, kg.
In addition to the Greco Roman 2009 Junior Team is Max Nowry at 50 kg, Jesse Thielke at 55 kg, Donald Vinson at 66kg, Travis Rutt at 84 kg, and Tyrell Fortune at 96kg.
The coaching staff for the USA Wrestling Greco-Roman team includes Developmental Coach Ike Anderson of Colorado Springs, Colorado and Eric Wetzel of Chicago, Illinois.
"I feel the boys are ready," said Anderson. We have been training with the Senior Greco-Roman team and also with Germany, Denmark, and Croatia. This is good for the guys and helps them be familiar and knowledgeable on a European level."
Dave Bennett, one of the coaches of the Men's Freestyle Junior team, is looking forward to the World Championships and is preparing the team in camp now at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs.
There are no returning athletes from the 2008 Junior World Team in Freestyle, but all of the athletes have shown great potential. The team is a mix of high school and college stars.
Among the college stars is NCAA runner up Andrew Howe from the University of Wisconsin at 74kg. Jason Chamberlain from Boise State will wrestle at 66 kg, Jordan Oliver from Oklahoma State will compete at 66 kg, Tyrell Fortune from Clackamas Community College is at 96kg and Dom Bradley from the University of Missouri is at 120kg.
Those who were high school wrestlers during the 2007-2008 year are Carson Kuhn of Utah at 50kg, Tony Ramos of Illinois at 55kg, and Chris Perry of Oklahoma at 84kg.
Joining Bennett on the coaching staff is 3x NCAA champion and 2004 Olympian Eric Guerrero.
"Eric is a great asset for the kids," said Bennett. "This is a good group of athletes with great credentials. These athletes are active on all levels and have been successful in a lot of areas. This team is fairly young and some people may look at it as a disadvantage. This is an advantage and opportunity intended for experience for becoming a Senior athlete. All of these kids are capable of medals, and we are going to come out of camp ready for Turkey on August 3rd."
