AKRON, Ohio - Jahwon Akui of Illinois was a perfect choice for Outstanding Wrestler
Akui continued to stockpile momentum and national titles after capturing the FILA Cadet Nationals freestyle championship on Sunday at the University of Akron Field House.
Akui, a double Cadet Nationals champion in Fargo last year, won a FILA Cadet Nationals title in Greco-Roman on Friday.
Akui scored a 1-0, 1-0 win over Nick Proctor of Illinois in the freestyle finals at 76 kg/167.5 lbs. on Sunday afternoon.
"It was a long, tough weekend, but I had the determination to double in both styles," Akui said. "I just took it one period at a time and stayed focused and locked in on what I wanted to accomplish. I was determined to win the gold."
Akui plans to be back in Fargo this July to try and win a couple of more national titles.
"I think it's very important to wrestle in a lot of these events in the spring and summer, and keep trying to get better and better," he said. "Some of my friends just hang out in the summer after folkstyle season, but I'm still working and trying to make myself a better wrestler. I'm going to wrestle in as many of these big tournaments as I possibly can."
Minnesota's Dylan Ness and Michigan's Taylor Massa, who won USA Wrestling Triple Crowns in Cadets in 2008, both won FILA Cadet freestyle titles on Sunday. Ness won at 138.75 lbs. and Massa was the champion at 152.
