Mocco drops two bouts at heavyweight prize money tournament in Russia, October 21

Olympian Steve Mocco (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) dropped both of his matches in the Osman Abdurakhmanov Memorial International in Gergebil, Russia, October 21.
This special event featured only wrestlers who compete in the 96 kg/211.5 lbs. and 120 kg/264.5 lbs. divisions.
The champion of this tournament earned $7,000, with the runner-up earning $5,000 and the bronze medalists earning $3,000.
Mocco was defeated in his opening match by Ruslan Sheikov of Belarus, 1-1, 1-0. Sheikov was a 2006 World bronze medalist competing at 96 kg/211.5 lbs.
Mocco scored first in the opening period, but Sheikov scored a point with 10 seconds left to capture the period. The second period was scoreless, and Shiekov scored from the offensive position in the clinch.
Sheikov upset 2007 World champion Beylal Makhov of Russia in the next round, then went on to capture the gold medal at the tournament. Makhov won his World title competing at 120 kg/264.5 lbs.
When Sheikov reached the finals, Mocco was drawn back into the repechage rounds, and drew Makhov in the next match. Makhov defeated Mocco, 1-2, 1-0, 1-0.
Mocco won the first period with a sweep single leg takedown and a foot sweep. The second period was scoreless, and Makhov scored a takedown from the clinch. In the deciding third period, Makhov forced Mocco to step out of bounds to score the only point.
It was the third tournament that Mocco entered while in Russia. He won a gold medal at the Dmitri Korkin International in Yakutsk, Russia, October 11-12, and also participated in the Shamil Oumakhanov International Championships in Khasavurt, Russia, October 18-19.
Mocco placed seventh at the 2008 Olympic Games. He has been a four-time U.S. Nationals runner-up. Mocco won NCAA Div. I titles for both Oklahoma State and the Univ. of Iowa. He is originally from North Bergen, N.J.
