The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors in Arizona has declared Thursday, October 16, 2008 as Henry Cejudo Day in Maricopa County.
Cejudo, the 2008 Olympic gold medalist in freestyle wrestling at 55 kg/121 lbs., lived in Maricopa County for a number of years, and attended Maryville High School as a freshman and sophomore, where he won Arizona state high school titles.
A community reception honoring Cejudo and his mother, Nelly Rico, will be held Thursday, Oct. 16 at the American Legion Post 41 Patio, 715 S. 2nd Avenue in Phoenix between 5:30 p.m. and 7 p.m.
The event in Phoenix is sponsored by Maricopa County Supervisor Mary Rose and Earl Wilcox, American Legion Post 41, Post 41 Women's Auxiliary, Chicanos Por La Causa, Friendly House and Valle del Sol.
"We are very proud of him," said Supervisor Mary Rose Wilcox. "In the county, we are looking for good role models for kids. He is disciplined, kept his eye on the ball and got the job done. It is not just that he is from this community. When somebody does something like that, he sets an example for others."
Wilcox said that numerous youth from the community are expected at the event, and that there will be some special presentations to him from the sponsoring organizations. She said that there will be food and refreshments, and everybody is welcome to attend.

Henry Cejudo Day
WHEREAS, Henry Cejudo became the youngest American to win a gold medal in freestyle wrestling when he won the 55-kilogram (121 pounds) freestyle final in the recent Summer Olympic Games in Beijing in August; and
WHEREAS, Henry Cejudo, the son of Mexican immigrants, took a victory lap around the gymnasium draped in an American flag and said: "The United States is the greatest country in the world"; and
WHEREAS, Henry Cejudo spent some of his younger years in the Cartwright Elementary School District and joined the Sunkist Kids wrestling club at the age of 10 and subsequently attended Maryvale High School (2002 - 2003); and
WHEREAS, Maricopa County is joining with the American Legion Post 41, American Legion Post 41 Women's Auxiliary, Chicanos Por la Causa, Friendly House, Valle Del Sol to honor Henry Cejudo;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors proclaim Thursday, October 16, 2008, as
