MINSK, BELARUS - Two U.S. wrestlers, men's freestyler Travis Paulson (Ames, Iowa/Sunkist Kids) and women's freestyle Sharon Jacobson (Colorado Springs, Colo/Gator WC), claimed bronze medals at the Alexander Medved International on Saturday.
Paulson captured a bronze medal at 74 kg/163 lbs. He defeated Magomedov of Russia in the bronze-medal match.
After an opening round win, Jacobson was defeated in the second round to Irina Guzak of Ukraine. She rebounded by beating Lenka Martinakova of the Czech Republic, 2-0; 2-0 in her first wrestleback match, then claimed the bronze medal by injury default over Elena Komarova of Azerbaijan.
Jacobson was the only U.S. women's wrestler in action on Saturday.
"This is Sharon's first tournament back since knee surgery. Naturally, we knew we were going to see some rust. Still, she looks physically as strong or stronger than before her rehabilitation," said U.S. coach Levi Weikel-Magden. "Slowly but surely, Sharon is converting her basic wrestling foundation to a more solid, more well-rounded set of skills. We will be looking to increase her conditioning and improve in those areas that cost Sharon in her match [in the quarter-finals]. All of our girls who made this trip continue to prove their commitment to focusing on competition and preparing to the best of their ability."
At 84 kg/185 lbs., Jake Herbert (Wexford, Pa./New York AC) placed fifth, dropping a bronze-medal match to Bagomaev of Russia. According to Freestyle Developmental Coach Dave Bennett, there was a controversy in the third-period clinch in this match.
One other U.S. wrestler was eliminated in the consolation rounds, one match prior to the medal rounds. At 84 kg/185 lbs., B.J. Padden, Colorado Springs, Colo. (Sunkist Kids) was eliminated by Urishev of Russia.
