The U.S. Olympic Wrestling Trials will air this Sunday at noon ET on MSNBC. It is the ninth in a series of 13 consecutive Sundays of Olympic Trials coverage on MSNBC. Two-time U.S. Olympic medalist Rulon Gardner calls the action alongside play-by-play announcer Matt Devlin.
The U.S. Olympic Wrestling Trials were held in Las Vegas, Nev., at the Thomas and Mack Center on the campus of UNLV. Sixteen weight classes were contested, with the U.S. Olympic Team position determined in each division in a competition format. Women's freestyle, men's freestyle and men's Greco-Roman are featured in the broadcast.
2000 Olympic gold medalist and 2004 Olympic bronze medalist Rulon Gardner makes his broadcasting debut this weekend as a commentator. Gardner shocked the world at the 2000 Sydney Olympics when he won the gold medal after defeating Russia's Aleksander Karelin. Karelin had been undefeated for thirteen years and had not given up a point in six years prior to his loss to Gardner. In addition to Gardner's Olympic medals, his achievements include U.S. Champion in 1995, 1997 and 2001. In 2001 alone, Gardner was awarded the James E. Sullivan Award for amateur athlete of the year, a gold medal at the World Wrestling Championship, Jesse Owens Award and United States Olympic Committee Sportsman of the Year.
NBC, USA Network, MSNBC and Universal Sports will offer more than 50 hours of Olympic Trials coverage, highlighted by primetime coverage on NBC and USA, as the USA's greatest athletes seek to represent their country and qualify for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. NBC's coverage features three nights of swimming in primetime over the July 4th weekend; USA offers primetime coverage of swimming and late night coverage of track & field. Universal Sports presents early-round coverage previously not seen on TV.
